After meeting with China’s Xi, Biden will host a solo press conference

Biden and Xi in Beijing for the first summit of bilateral military-to-military dialogue on nuclear physics and counternarcotics

President Biden is expected to announce agreements on military communication channels and counternarcotics at a solo press conference after speaking with the Chinese leader for the first time in a year.

The leaders met prior to the summit. The White House is attempting a strong-on-China approach, which has seen tensions between the world’s two largest economies rise.

Top among them is an agreement to resume high-level military-to-military dialogue. The communications were halted after Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan.

The two leaders emerged from the more than four hours of talks with an agreement to stay in touch. Both Biden and Xi agree that they should both be able to pick up the phone and talk at will.

The White House has said that efforts to counteract the trade of Fentanyl will be a topic of Biden and Xi’s conversation.

conflicts in the Middle East and between Iran and Hamas will also be included, he said.

But the sons and daughters of those builders are growing up in a very different world from their parents. They inherit a nation that is ready to make its mark on the world, but they’re also going to try to fill in how it looks and feels, and challenge older humans in the process. There is widespread and growing discussion, for instance, of how to make Chinese society more equitable, green, urban and scientific. China is undergoing a profound transition to a high-tech, highly educated, prosperous and powerful nation that its “builder generation” could only imagine.

America has faced a lot of competitors, but China may be the greatest one. As U.S. Ambassador Nicholas Burns put it, China “is infinitely stronger than the Soviet Union ever was,” thanks to its economic, scientific and technological power, its capacity for innovation and its global ambition. But rather than a foe, we should see in China — and its many strengths — a powerful potential partner to work with in solving the world’s biggest problems. It’s not always wise to invest massive amounts of money in a struggle for global supremacy when you may not end up getting what you expect. Did America win the Cold War, outranking the Soviet Union but not in favor of U.S. interests?

Microsoft introduced its own chips that were compatible with A.I. The semiconductors, which will be used in the company’s Azure cloud data centers, are the latest effort by the tech industry to reduce its dependence on chips from Nvidia for their artificial intelligence applications. Arm’s shares jumped nearly 4% on Wednesday after the news of the Microsoft chip designs.

What the Biden-Xi Talks Accomplished (and Didn’t): Disney, the U.K., and Israel

Activist investor targets Disney. ValueAct Capital has amassed a stake in the entertainment giant, DealBook hears, confirming a report by 13D Monitor. Disney has been under investor discontent with the company’s performance.

The Senate approved a bill that would keep the government open. The measure would keep the federal government going through the first half of next year, allowing for President Biden to sign it. But the bill excludes more contentious items, including aid for Ukraine and Israel, and Congress will have to negotiate again on funding in a few months.

Israel and Hamas appear closer to a hostage deal. Israeli officials say the proposal would see the group free about 50 women and children in exchange for a pause in fighting and the release of roughly the same number of Palestinian women and children held in Israeli prisons.

There is a summit on the 29th. Vice President Harris, Musk, andHuang are some of the guests. You can apply to attend if you want.

Xi met with the United States and criticized Beijing for their actions on nuclear power cuts, the Israel-Hamas war, and its influence on the Middle East

Yet the dinner showed that many aren’t ready to quit China. “China is still enormously important for any multinational that you can think of, even though they have talked about de-risking,” said Richard McGregor, an China expert at the Lowy Institute, an Australia-based think tank. They aren’t getting out but they might not be investing as much. And it’s a market they can’t ignore and have to try and manage.”

Xi also praised the achievements of this meeting on Wednesday evening. In an address to U.S. business leaders in downtown San Francisco, the Chinese leader said there is “plenty of room for our corporations, and we are fully able to help each other succeed and achieve win-win outcomes.”

And the two sides didn’t make much progress on systems to ban the use of artificial intelligence to manage their nuclear arsenals, agreeing only that their officials would keep talking.

They disagreed on a lot of things. U.S. export controls on advanced technology were intended to suppress China, according to Xi. Biden’s effort to enlist Beijing as a kind of peacekeeper in the Middle East — specifically, putting pressure on Iran to not escalate the Israel-Hamas war — was unsuccessful.

President Biden and the Chinese leader smiled and chatted while walking through a garden on their first face-to-face meeting in a year.

“We are ready to deepen our relationship with the US so we can meet the wishes of the Californians.” he said in response to loud applause.

If it was not possible for Xi to change the trajectory of the U.S-China relationship, his visit seemed to allay apprehensions about pandas.

Bilateral trade and investments have been shifted away from the phase in which they had been counted as the stabilizer. This structural challenge remains unchanged and unresolved,” she said.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to feature in high-level bilateral talks. Biden was in favor of the continued withholding of military support to Moscow.

The Biden-Xi Dialogue on Taiwan: How China is preparing to Face the Problems of the 2019 Taiwan Drug Experiment

In 2019, China banned the export of fentanyl, but illicit drug manufacturers adapted. Now, most of the precursor ingredients for the drug come from China. Companies that sell precursors and pill presses will be put under tighter scrutiny.

A senior Biden administration official said the administration had worked with the Chinese government to target specific companies. There is proof in the pudding here. These are important steps.

Biden said that he and the president would start a dialogue on managing artificial intelligence. Beijing also decided to invite 50,000 young Americans to China on exchange and study programs in the next five years.

The issue of Taiwan featured prominently at Wednesday’s Biden-Xi meeting. Taiwan was the most threatening issue in the relationship according to a senior U.S. official.

Ahead of Taiwan’s presidential election in January, candidates seem to be aware of the danger if things go wrong.

A senior administration official said that China preferred a peaceful reunification with the island in their conversation with Biden.

According to the official’s tally, Xi also noted how he had heard reports that China was planning for military action against Taiwan in 2027, or 2035. The administration official said that he said there were no such plans. NPR has contacted the Chinese government for comment.

Predictions from the Meeting of the Biden-Xi Observer on the Second Trade-off of the Two-State System

Speaking at an event in San Francisco ahead of the Biden-Xi meeting on Wednesday, Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong said “the entire country” was tuning in.

“The only concern is that [if] these two major powers cannot reach agreement, cannot work together, [it] will negatively affect the region,” he said through an interpreter.

“They may not like what they say to each other, they may not like what they hear, and they may not resolve all the key issues that divide them. In my opinion, if they’re not engaging, if they’re not talking, if they’re not involved in a mechanism to air grievances or seek clarifications, then there is a chance of miscalculation and mishaps. Neither side wants that.

“You can be cynical and say that talking and having discussions do not solve the problem, and you wouldn’t be wrong.” Finkelstein said that not talking to each other is still a low-risk proposition.

But beyond the positive spin, can this meeting help alter the trajectory of the bilateral relationship? Here are a few take-aways from Wednesday’s meeting.

Biden told a news conference on Wednesday that he had taken a tough tone with his Chinese counterpart. He again used the word “dictator” to describe his Chinese counterpart.

“That‘s been worrisome,” Biden said. Accidents happen in that way. Administration officials say this has been a top issue in talks with China in recent months, and Biden expressed relief that there was finally agreement to get the talks back up and running.
