Larry Hogan doesn’t plan to run for president in 2036

“This should have been a huge red wave. Hogan was ineligible to run for a third term in Maryland this year, but he says it should have been one of the biggest red waves he has ever had. Despite President Joe Biden’s low approval ratings, the governor said his party “still didn’t perform.”
“I think commonsense conservatives that focused on talking about issues people cared about, like the economy and crime and education, they did win,” Hogan said. “But people who tried to relitigate the 2020 election and focused on conspiracy theories … they were all almost universally rejected.”
Hogan said there was no question about that, when asked if Trumps upcoming announcement could affect the Georgia Senate election.
Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker will meet in the December 6 runoff after neither candidate were projected to surpass the 50% vote threshold needed to win the primary outright. The Georgia runoff is not expected to affect the race for Senate control, after CNN projected that Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto would win reelection in Nevada, ensuring that Democrats will hold at least 50 seats. Vice President Harris is a Democrat and she can break any 50-50 ties.
Hogan said that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was one of the important voices for the party. The person that is pegged to have won his second term last week is expected to become a potential contender for the GOP presidential contention.
“I have long said that I care more about ensuring a future for the Republican Party than securing my own future in the Republican Party. That is why I will not be seeking the Republican nomination for president,” he said in a statement.
The critic said that the stakes were too high and he shouldn’t be in a multicar pileup that could help Mr. Trump regain the nomination.
A race that has been slow to take shape is the reason Trump is making his third bid for the Republican nomination. Former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy entered the primary last month. New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu is considered to be one of the potential candidates for the GOP nomination.

Our nation faces some great challenges and cannot afford to be consumed by the pettiest grievances. We can push back and defeat the excesses of elitist policies on the left without resorting to angry, divisive and performative politics,” he said in his statement Sunday.
Hogan wrote in The New York Times that he wouldn’t run for president or for a Cabinet position. “I have long said that I care more about ensuring a future for the Republican Party than securing my own future in the Republican Party. And that is why I will not be seeking the Republican nomination for president.”
While many in the GOP are considering ways to move on from Trump, there is little appetite among primary voters for a vocal critic of the president. At the moment, the other prominent Trump adversaries including former Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois do not appear to be considering a campaign.
He faces only three formal challengers right now: his former U.N. ambassador, himself, and a businessman from Michigan.
Others, including former Vice President Mike Pence, ex-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, may join in the coming months. A potential candidate for the Republican nomination, Asa Hutchinson, said on CNN that “March is a message month and Republicans need to have alternatives to Trump.” “We don’t need to be led by arrogance and revenge in the future.”

“He’s very tough,” Hogan said. “But, you know, I beat life-threatening cancer. Having Trump tell me names on social media did not scare me off.
“It’s mostly about the country and about the party,” Hogan added. It was not a decision made by the government. It was like, I didn’t need that job. I didn’t need to run for another office. It was really I was considering it because I thought it was public service and maybe I can make a difference.”
Hogan had never held elected office before and in his first year as governor, he focused on pocketbook issues. He lowered tolls, an action he could take without approval from the General Assembly, long controlled by Democrats. He was also challenged by unrest in Baltimore in the wake of the death of Freddie Gray. Hogan sent the National Guard to prevent further rioting.

In June of that year, he was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma but continued working while receiving treatment. He has been in remission since November 2015.
Hogan criticized Trump in 2020 as chair of the National Governors Association, saying that he was playing down the threat of the coronaviruses despite grave warnings from top national experts.
“I did not go out of my way to criticize the president,” Hogan said. “But unlike a lot of Republicans, I’m not the guy that’s just going to sit down and shut up and not stand up and say something if I think something’s going wrong.”
Describing the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, as “one of the darkest days in American history,” Hogan said Trump should have resigned or been removed from office.
