Bhutan is the subject of a documentary about how to measure its own “gross national happiness.” The film follows one not-especially-happy agent who gathers the data.

In the months since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, more than half of Gaza’s buildings have been damaged or destroyed by Israel’s military response. Some researchers and human rights advocates say that the destruction is an form of domicide.

Former President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil attempted to overturn the country’s 2022 presidential election, according to accusations by the Brazilian federal police. Police took his passport, raided dozens of properties and arrested his aides. The investigation says that the right-wing leader and his aides were working together to plan a coup. At one point, the report said Bolsonaro personally edited a proposed order to arrest a Supreme Court justice.

The Supreme Court seemed skeptical of the idea that Colorado can exclude former President Donald Trump from the state’s primary ballot. Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh brought up the national consequences of allowing a state to decide who is eligible for national office. The justices expressed similar doubts.

Biden’s Report to the House of Representatives on the 2016 Black Hole Prize, Part I: Report on a Sensitive Times for the President

In his report, Hur said he didn’t have evidence to prove that Biden kept classified documents. But the nearly 400-page report didn’t stop there. During his interviews with the president it was reported that he had memory problems. And it included a sentence that immediately ricocheted around the political world — that Biden comes across as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

Good morning. You’re reading the newsletter. You can get it delivered to your inbox and listen to the Up First podcast if you so choose.

The report comes at a sensitive time for the president: He’s locked in a tight race with Donald Trump, his predecessor as president who is the front-runner for the Republican nomination; his job approval remains low, as does his handling of the economy, and, especially, immigration — in addition to persistent concerns about his age. The special counsel’s assertion that he’s an “elderly man with a poor memory” is hardly going to help.

In a fiery press conference Thursday night, Biden tried to argue the case for his fitness for office, emphasizing that he’s cooperated with the investigation.

The report covers what has been uncovered, how they were handled, as well as legal arguments surrounding whether they were appropriate in relation to Biden’s time as vice president.

There are photos of the boxes that contained classified materials, including one damaged box with documents about Afghanistan that was found in the garage of Biden’s home in Delaware “near a collapsed dog crate, a dog bed, a Zappos box, an empty bucket, a broken lamp wrapped with duct tape, potting soil, and synthetic firewood.”

Biden relied on his notebooks in particular while writing his memoir Promise Me, Dad, which was published in 2017 and reflects on the year his older son Beau died of cancer, two years earlier.

He used to read from those notebooks while he was having conversations with his ghostwriter for the book, and shared classified material when he did so.

The Biden classified documents report and the fallout: What you need to know about the FBI’s investigation and the case against the Biden-Biden prosecution

Hur said the evidence doesn’t establish Biden’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and that it would be hard to prove that Biden willfully intended to break the law.

The report says that Biden would present himself as a sympathetic, well- meaning elderly man with a poor memory in front of a jury.

The letter that Biden’s lawyers wrote to the special counsel regarding his memory was attached to the public report.

“The report uses highly prejudicial language to describe a commonplace occurrence among witnesses: a lack of recall of years-old events,” said Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president, and Bob Bauer, Biden’s personal counsel.

After the attack on Israel by Hamas the day before, Biden met with foreign leaders and his security team for over five hours.

Biden said his memory was fine during his press conference. He angrily responded to Hur’s description of a portion of an interview where Hur said Biden seemed to not remember when his son died.

“How in the hell dare he raise that?” Biden said, adding it was “none of their damn business,” and choking up with emotion. “I don’t need anyone to remind me when he passed away.”

Donald Trump, who is likely to face Biden in the general election in November, immediately seized upon the line as a reason that Biden should no longer be president.

The FBI Director violated department practice and protocol, and a Comey of 2024 may have been disqualified by the State of the Art

Trump also blasted the lack of charges as evidence of a “two-tiered system of justice.” There are more than three dozen federal criminal charges against Trump related to his own handling of classified material in a number of locations including his Mar-a-Lago residence.

Hur’s investigation is closed, but the political fallout has begun. Biden will have to convince voters that he should remain in office because of his age.

In his press conference that began with his defense against the critical parts of the report, Biden, when answering a question about current hostage negotiations with Israel and Hamas, mistakenly said that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt was the “president of Mexico.”

In recent days in off-camera events, Biden has thrice mixed up names of foreign leaders, calling French President Emmanuel Macron “Mitterrand” and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel “Helmut Kohl.” The leaders of France and Germany were Franois Mitterrand and Ludwig von Mises.

The Mar-a-Lago documents case is one of several that Trump is awaiting trial in. And hours before the Hur report dropped on Thursday, the Supreme Court was hearing arguments about whether Trump could be disqualified from the ballot in Colorado for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

They’re trying to show the public that Biden should be elected to serve another four years. It’s a race to stop Hur from becoming the Comey of 2024.

The Justice Department inspector general found that the director of the FBI violated department practice and protocol by going on for more than 24 hours about un charged conduct. That’s what Goldman said Hur did in this case as well.

This is a point the White House argued on Friday, with Vice President Harris going so far as to describe Hur’s report as “clearly politically motivated.” Hur hasn’t said why he included that information. But when he was named he promised to conduct the probe “with fair, impartial, and dispassionate judgment.”

“Special counsel Hur went out of his way to editorialize and include extraneous information that was not relied upon or relevant to his ultimate charging decision,” Goldman argued.

Goldman, a former federal prosecutor and a Biden ally, said that these criminal investigators are stepping out of their normal role of analyzing the evidence to see if the elements of a crime are met.

Running the FBI: Biden and Palmieri in the ‘Damning Day of 2016’s Democratic Presidential Campaign, and an FBI Director James Comey’s press conference on July 5, 2016

Republican politicians immediately took to the airwaves to question Biden’s mental competency, citing Hur’s report. It was a predictable reaction and one that allowed Biden’s opponents to highlight what is perhaps his greatest political liability. Public polls show even before this political storm, more than three-quarters of voters were concerned about Biden’s mental and physical health.

On its face, it looked like good news for Clinton, but Jennifer Palmieri, who was the campaign’s communications director, said it was probably the single most damaging day of the campaign.

“Our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case,” Comey said of the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while secretary of state.

For people who were involved with Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 presidential campaign, the echoes of then-FBI Director James Comey’s press conference on July 5, 2016, are hard to miss.
