What Do Conservatives Think of Donald Trump and the Future of the United States? A Bowling Alley Insight from Luke Rose and Nikki Haley

A senior advisor for the campaign says that Trump has brought in new voters and expanded the party by unifying the base.

The choice is between Haley, who supports strong foreign policy, or Trump, who is the embodiment of the new wave of conservative populism.

The forces within the party have been pushing for the choice for a long time, said Alex Conant, who worked on Marco Rubio’s presidential campaign.

The tightening race has thrown a spotlight on the identity crisis within the Republican party and the debate between populism and small-government conservatism.

“The message that will be sent [on Tuesday] is that Trump has officially been chosen. He’s the one,” Rose predicted. “And beyond that, we have to prepare ourselves, whether we like it or not, for a MAGA America or a Biden America.”

Luke Rose, a 26-year-old casino dealer, was bowling with co-workers at Yankee Lanes, a downtown Manchester bowling alley. He said that he sees the conflict between Trump and Haley as being between what he calls the “MAGA romanticism” of the president and traditional conservative values.

Their choice between former President Donald Trump and his former U.N. ambassador, Nikki Haley, will also send a big signal about their feelings on the future of the party.

Phil says he’s an American. The 59 year old transportation worker says Trump changed the party and he evolved with the former president.

“You know, I was pretty stagnant Republican,” he said. “But ever since Donald Trump started running in 2015, I think his message is revealing to who the party is.”

The Freest State in the State (South): A dirty and corrupt state with no sales tax, income tax, minimum wage, inventory tax

Overall, we are the freest. We have a lot of freedom here. We have no sales tax. We don’t pay income tax. We have no capital gains tax. We are the only state with no belt law. We don’t have a helmet mandate. The minimum wage is not mandated by the state. We have the right to carry. Your firearms are not required to be registered. You can buy fireworks here. We don’t have a capital gains tax. We do not have inventory tax.

Oh, absolutely. I mean, nobody’s got a shot. I put up more Trump signs on properties and businesses in the state than Haley has in all of the state, I think.

Absolutely. It is a very corrupt state. We’ve got a dirty governor who’s tied to the bushes. John Sununu was the chief of staff to Bush senior and he used to speak about the new world order.

What Do We Need to Know About New Hampshire Principal Trump Haley? Breechless, soulless, blech”

Only to see what is going on and flag waving at their events. But they’re nothing like this. I mean, obviously, who has vendors like this? There’s nothing like it. There’s nothing like it. I have been to find you never.

And then Nikki Haley is just a straight up soulless, like Hillary Clinton — like, Republican counterpart, completely just robot like — who’s the Facebook guy? Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg were similar in that all the blood was drained from you. There’s a lot of blech. Like, you could just throw all those people in a barrel.

Haley: I’m all you. What do you need to know about New Hampshire, and what do you want to do about it?

It is great. He’s just great. He is just funny. He’s got good humor. And humor is important. Humor — people are like, oh, what do you care about with policy and everything? It is important that humor is your soul. If they are funny, they are genuinely funny, it shows connection to other souls, so that says a lot about them.

You are comparing to other options, right? So I guess it’s just the closer match, right? With regard to what Haley wants to do, let’s not get involved in it and let’s focus on the conflict with Israel. Everyone has their pet, let’s get involved. They want. I have a war, too, as well as me and myself. And Trump is like, eh, it’s kind of stupid. I respect that.

Nikki Haley and the State of the Art: What New Hampshire Primordial Trump Haley Can Tell Us About Our State and Where We Are

Exciting to be here. And I’ve never been to a Trump rally. It seemed like a lot of fun and Trump was very funny. You get to see the guy live.

There’s been a lot of talk how Nikki Haley might be doing better in New Hampshire. When you’re in your communities, when you’re around, are people talking about who they’re going to vote for? Who do you think will win on Tuesday?

I can’t ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources if we don’t have a clear path to victory. Accordingly, I am suspending my campaign.

Trump is better than Joe Biden. That is clear. I signed a pledge to support the Republican nominee, and I will honor that pledge.

He has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear — a repackaged formed of warmed over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents.

Does Donald Trump really care about the border? What do you need to know about the New Hampshire primary? How do you want to know who you support?

He focused on issues of wokeness when polling showed that Republican voters cared much more about the border and the economy. People wanted real Trump after he tried to be Trump lite. At some point he was still awkward.

In other words, DeSantis’s decision to drop out doesn’t change much at all. It makes it official what was already true. Donald Trump is running in New Hampshire with Haley being the other candidate.

Because I do think the closer it is to 30, the more pressure there will be on someone like Nikki Haley to drop out. The closer it is to a single digit, the more difficult it will be for Haley to keep pushing for South Carolina. So if the polling is correct and Donald Trump does end the night at the top of the results in New Hampshire, how big is that distance between him and Haley?

There are a lot of Independents in New Hampshire. There are more Republicans. I want to ask you who you support in the New Hampshire primary.

The Run-Up at a Trump rally, and what it tells us about New Hampshire first-Primordial-Trump-Haley

All the telltale signs of a Trump rally are on the street. You’ve got your cars driving past with American flags honking and rallying people up. There is a big line waiting for people who are here five, six hours early.

“The Run-Up” is reported by me, Astead Herndon, and produced by Elisa Gutierrez, Caitlin O’Keefe, and Anna Foley. It is edited by Rachel Dry, Lisa Tobin, and Frannie Carr Toth, with music from Dan Powell, Ovila, Pat McCusker, Diane Wong, and Sophia Lanman. It was mixed by Sophia Lanman and Chris Wood and fact checked by Caitlin Love.

Special thanks to many people, in particular Paula Szuchman and Sam Dolnick. Do you have a question about the 2024 election? Email us at the [email protected]. If you want to send us the file, you can use the voice memo app on your phone. That email, again, is [email protected].

Is the New State Order the First State in the U.S.? Taking a stand against the Biden-Boden era: a challenge to the White House?

If you like the show, follow our feed on your podcasts to get the latest episodes. Thanks for listening, y’all.

And the funny thing is I thought we would get a bunch of these kind of primary days in the next couple of months. It might be one of our final competitive primary days, because we might have to savor this one, even though it is a unity message from Republicans.

Yeah. I mean, I’m excited in the same way that — I think before Iowa, I was really exhausted with the idea of talking about how people were going to vote without them voting. And so one thing that I appreciate about these days is we can talk less about polling and more about how people really express themselves.

I am watching to see how it ends up, but I don’t think it will matter in the race for the Democratic nomination at this point.

And the primary challenge of the order is really the challenge for the country. How do we embrace voices that have been excluded while also appreciating the strength of our traditions? And those are not easy questions. The party will work it out by the year 2028. We won’t all be behind Joe Biden, but for now, I think we’ll all support him.

But when 40 percent of people who were enslaved came through the Port of Charleston and the president is saying that we have to have a recognition of that history in this country and that that voice has to matter, I think people even in New Hampshire recognize the importance of that, but that we also have to recognize the hundred year history here and the history of civic activism.

I believe that the president was motivated by the idea of elevating the voices of black and brown people. But it has to be done also with recognizing that history and tradition of New Hampshire so that no one’s delegates get disqualified. I think we will work towards that outcome.

But come Tuesday, there is a risk that President Biden finishes — you’re here doing a campaign for him to not have that moment of embarrassment on Tuesday. Was it a mistake for them in this cycle to switch the order in the way that they did?

The Biden campaign and the White House are in a dilemma, as all the challengers who are long shot are appearing on the ballot. They want to honor their new state order and make clear that South Carolina is the first place where their presidential primary officially starts. But at the same time, they’re seeking to avoid the embarrassment of one of Biden’s challengers, mainly Dean Phillips, who’s invested a lot of money in the state of New Hampshire, to finish above Joe Biden and possibly create bad headlines or create a sense that this president is suffering from a lack of enthusiasm within his own party.

This is important to Biden narratively. Does it matter in the number of delegates? How much of a difference does this race make for Biden?

Yeah. It’s way more about the narrative than it is about the actual logistics delegates that lead someone to be the presidential nominee. Because the DNC is not going to recognize the New Hampshire primary, this contest is only going to be about a state contest that voters and the media will follow but won’t have an effect in terms of delegates they count at the convention. That all starts in South Carolina.

The Supercongressing Senatorial candidate’s preview of the real Joe Biden-Harris presidency and what she expected to see next week

I mean, this is a real colonial Northeast home. We have a lot of yard signs that say “Write In Joe Biden.” And we have some Biden-Harris signs also on the lawn.

And I’m going to remember to fill in the bubble by the side, by his name. And every one of you needs to do that as well. You must make sure that your friends and neighbors are doing that.

I think we’ll have plenty of time after this cycle to make sure that we have the diversity of this nation represented. I believe that having four states that are critical to the success of the nation is important. I think the DNC will be able to do that.

Great. And so you mentioned at the beginning of this that the Democrats are here, too. What is happening with the Democrats? And what are you watching for in the Democrats’ quarter?

She’s been saying that Donald Trump is someone who can’t beat Joe Biden. But now she’s going beyond that to say that if Nikki Haley was at the top of the ticket, you would have Republican wins up and down the ballot. So I considered Saturday a kind of preview of the Haley that’s been waiting to emerge until it’s a one-on-one match-up with Donald Trump. She’s been kind of saving her attacks till this moment and premiering them in the last couple of days.

I think — well, she told us this directly herself when we gaggled with her on Friday. She said the goal was to get into the field. And now that the field has been winnowed, it’s about drawing contrasts between herself and Trump. I am curious to see if it works.

At the event we were at in New Hampshire, she talked about how he cozied up to dictators, talked about how he added money to the national debt, how he didn’t follow through on the general premise of delivering Republican policy victories. Her core message has been saying from the beginning that she wants to see electability.

Yeah. For my ears, it was pretty different since she was focused on her other opponents and didn’t mention Trump in her messages from the debates.

I wanted to take a deep look at that feeling. And so I grabbed Jazmine Ulloa, the “Times” reporter who has been following Nikki Haley for months, to try to ask her, OK, is this messaging new? And when did Haley start talking about Trump?

This is definitely not the typical stump speech. She has really sharpened her argument in the last few days here. She’s really sharpened her case against Trump. She’s really been lumping Trump and Biden together as part of this old guard, saying we need to move forward.

Yeah. The majority of Americans don’t want to see two 80 — and Trump’s in the 70s. She says most Americans don’t like to see old people running for president.

The Key to the Campaign: Are New Hampshire Republicans Going to Do It Again? Is New Hampshire going to do it again? (Laughter about the fact that Donald Trump wasn’t at the Capitol)

Mm-mm. The most sharp attacks are often made by candidates in the last couple of days. What is the hope for the campaign? Why are they doing this now? Why couldn’t they do this two months ago?

I wasn’t in DC on January 6. I was not at the Capitol. But you know what? Look at Joe Biden two years ago and look at him today. That’s just what happens. We have to be honest about that.

And then yesterday — I don’t know if you saw it — but Trump went on this rant at this rally. He is going to say that Haley didn’t allow security into the Capitol. Nikki Haley kept all that from happening. Where was she at the riot? She should have been at the — what is he talking about?

I think there has recently been a change in tone in Haley that shows how important independence is and how she is trying to court them.

Well, it’s kind of the obvious question. Will Donald Trump be as dominant in New Hampshire as he was in Iowa? Will Republicans rally around him like they did in the 30 point victory?

OK. Astead, it is Monday morning. We are sitting on the floor of your hotel room in Manchester, New Hampshire. Ron DeSantis dropped out of the race yesterday. And we’ve spent the weekend talking to Haley supporters and Trump supporters. With all of that in mind, what are the main things that we should be watching for on Tuesday, on primary day?

Thanks for playing, Iowa, but give me a break. I mean, are you aware that Trump got 560,000 votes in the state of Iowa? That’s less than 2 percent. The choice of the Republican Party will be dictated by that. It’s not true. I don’t think so. You know who’s going to dictate the choice? You guys are. Now, the key to all this is the vote, getting out the vote, right? So you guys get it. You’re here. The higher the vote turnout, the better chance we have of shocking the world and actually delivering a win. It is possible. It’s possible.

You’re damn right you are. We have two, three days to go. The country is watching the world. They’re waiting to see, is New Hampshire going to do it again? Is New Hampshire showing how to conduct polling again? You are correct that we are. You’re darn Right, we are. We have been talking to people in the state. I have had the honor of crisscrossing —

Right now, there is a huge Trump rally in Manchester. People lined up outside. We were outside by the river at about 2 PM. There were people there from 7:30 to 9:00 AM. How can the Nikki Haleys of the world, how do they catch up with that level of energy? It looks like a different level of devotion.

That’s the thing that helps her. The person is a bully. He will lie and say anything to get him. He believes people believe in lies if they are told enough times. And he’s told plenty of lies.

I said — I don’t know if this is of benefit to you, but I said it to someone also who was working for Nikki. She reminds me of the same energy that Hillary had when she was running against Trump. And it’s inspiring and invigorating.

It’s not all about her. It’s really about the party and the country and how she can serve us, not how Trump can make himself bigger and better and — yeah.

Back when she first announced. She has been so positive and against the divisions in this country. The country needs to be brought together. And I think she can do that.

What Do You Need to Know About New Hampshire Primary Trump Haley? What Have You Been Reading About Trump? How Did He Get What You Want?

I don’t know how Trump hypnotizes people. I’m not sure. I am very offended by the amount of his personal values. What he did for us was very good, the economy and all of that. But his personal values too.

Politics are fine. And I think he did a lot for our country. They should have done a lot of the finishing work on the wall and the economy would have been better. He almost says it is all about me and I thank him all the time. He’s just — his personality is just too big, too much about himself. I don’t like his way of treating women.

So you’ve been seeing some of this Trump takeover from afar of the party. How do you feel about that? How does that — as someone who tried to pick Jeb Bush, Nikki Haley — those are different types of politicians — how has it been watching him kind of take over the party in that time?

What Do We Expect to Learn from Haley’s Voting Campaign in New Hampshire? What Will She Tell Us About Donald Trump and What Will He He Do?

We are here because we want to win. I flew here to volunteer because I think her coming in strong in New Hampshire really sets her up for other states. So high expectations, but I think she can win New Hampshire.

Iowa went Trump’s way by a large margin. He is leading here. What do you think about him on Tuesday? What would you consider a success?

For me, I supported him in ‘16 and in ‘20. But January was a deal breaker. I think Donald Trump can still be put around a lot of good people. I can’t support him anymore.

I’ve supported him before, but he’s a little different this time. I agree with some of his policies, but I think he isn’t the right person for us right now.

So I’ve been with Haley since she mentioned earmarks at the Iowa State Fair. I believe that Biden and Trump were both terrible on spending. I think Trump added to our debt. He increased the deficits. Haley is an alternative. She’s young, she’s optimistic, and she’s truly different.

You know, not too far from here, there’s a very raucous Trump rally happening right now. I am guessing you all prefer Haley, but what do you think about the prospect of Trump repeating himself, even though people are against that?

Do you think bird brain Haley can get people to come out early? I don’t think so. I bet she couldn’t get five people.

Earlier on Tuesday, Haley’s campaign in a memo laid out a hypothetical path into March, saying that she could compete in a wider variety of states, including the 16 states that vote on March 5, also known as Super Tuesday.

But instead, she finished third in Iowa and immediately started lowering expectations for New Hampshire. As she sprinted from diner meet-and-greets to hotel ballroom rallies, Haley never predicted a win in New Hampshire, instead saying she hoped for a “stronger” finish in the state.

“You’ve all heard the chatter among the political class,” Haley said. They are saying that the race is over. I have some good news for them. This race is far from over. There are dozens of states left to go.”

He was joined at his rally Tuesday by former rivals in the GOP contest, including entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and Tim Scott, a South Carolina U.S. senator whom Haley first appointed to the position. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, who succeeded Haley in the role, is a supporter of Trump.

New Hampshire seemed to be an ideal place for her. Independent voters, known as “undeclared” in the state, could participate in the Republican primary, giving her a boost. Haley and her allied super PACs spent more than $31 million on television ads in the small state, doubling pro-Trump spending. She also had the endorsement of the state’s popular Republican governor, Chris Sununu, who campaigned for her tirelessly.

MANCHESTER, N.H. — The Associated Press reported that Trump had won the New Hampshire primary, a victory that puts him on track to be the GOP’s nominee.

Is the Granite State a “fantasy” place? Robert Mueller’s political doom and his outbursts

We told ourselves that Robert Mueller’s investigation or Trump’s first impeachment or his second impeachment would stop him. We told ourselves that the methodical work of the congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol would seal his political doom. We told ourselves that he couldn’t survive four indictments encompassing 91 felony counts. We told ourselves that his outbursts were finally growing too vicious, his temper too volcanic, his lies too outrageous and ornate.

I kept hearing that, kept reading that, as various political observers turned a myth into a mantra, persuading themselves of her potency and Donald Trump’s vulnerability not only in the Granite State but also beyond it. They wanted so much to believe that Trump’s grip on the Republican Party might be loosening. They were desperate to know if he would not go back to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
