There are reported deaths of Onewheel e-skateboards

Changing Onewheels: A Safety Update for Onewheel Pint X, Pint, and XR-based Autonomous Vehicles

Now Future Motion is moving forward with a voluntary recall it chose not to do almost a year earlier. The company is asking owners to stop using their Onewheels until they take appropriate action. For the newer Onewheel GT, Onewheel Pint X, Onewheel Pint, and Onewheel Plus XR, a software update with a new warning system is the remedy.

A new video explains the process of updating onewheels, including how to connect the car to the app and run the update.

For early adopters, however, owners can receive a “pro-rated credit of $100 to the purchase of a new board,” according to Mudd. The credit will only be given if owners confirm they have no longer used the old model.

It’s rolling out a “haptic buzz” alert function that “riders can hear and feel” when they may be in danger of crashing. The safety update for the Onewheel GT model will be available in one week, and the other four will be available in six weeks. The original Onewheel and Onewheel+ are not eligible for the update.

Helmets and Skates: Consumer Product Safety Commission Report of Loss-Induced Head Trauma on Extremely Heavy Skateboards

The company issued the voluntary recall of 300,000 boards in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission after initially resisting CPSC’s push for a recall several months ago.

The reported deaths resulted from head trauma, the safety commission said. During at least three of the deaths, the rider wasn’t wearing a helmet.

The makers of the skateboards rejected the safety commission’s warnings, and said there was no need for riders to stop using their boards.
