An area of the us is under air quality warnings because of Canada’s smoke

Air Quality Predictions under Code Red Wildfire Smoke Alerts from the U.S. to the Midwest Regions of the Midwestern United States

Smoke from the wildfires reached Europe this week, but because it’s at a higher altitude in the atmosphere, the haze is mainly causing darker skies rather than health alerts.

The East Coast was under an air quality warning when smoke from the Canadian wildfires flew over cities, such as Philadelphia and Baltimore.

Canada has been having a particularly brutal wildfire season this year, with out-of-control blazes popping up across the country, straining the country’s firefighting resources and sending smoke across its southern border with the U.S.

Climate change is contributing to the rise in wildfires in the U.S. and across the globe, according to the United Nations.

If the air quality drops, experts recommend that you stay indoors as much as possible, and wear a N95 or similar one if you are outside, and limit strenuous activity.

The National Weather Service said the poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke could persist for a couple of days, though forecast specifics may change.

A purple alert rating means that the air quality in Madison, Wis., is not good, because of smoke from Canada’s wildfires.

Some parts of the Midwest were marked by purple dots on the AirNow map, signaling the need for people to limit their time outside.

“This week, the average air quality is expected to fluctuate between unhealthy for sensitive groups to unhealthy for everyone,” member station Michigan Radio reports, citing state meteorologists.

“On a Code Red Air Quality Action Day, young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis, are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should avoid outdoor activities, and everyone else should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion,” according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

They warn vulnerable people to avoid all physical activity outdoors and everyone else to avoid any heavy or lengthy physical activity outdoors under the more serious code purple conditions.

Because smoke and wind patterns can change quickly in very localized areas, the AirNow agency recommends entering your zip code on its website to learn the latest related alert levels.

Many areas that were recently under a red and purple alert are now under a dire alert. As Washington, D.C., issued a new code red alert early Thursday, the unhealthy conditions prompted organizers of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival to cancel Thursday’s opening ceremony.
