Several victims remain hospitalized as Louisville police investigate the bank shooting that left 5 dead

The shooting of a bank in Louisville, Kentucky, and a four-body victim is presumed to be a 25-year-old gunman

The suspect in the fatal shooting of four people in a bank in Louisville, Kentucky, is believed to have been a previous employee, according to Louisville Metro Police.

A source with knowledge of the scene on the ground says that one of the people shot was a police officer. There were shots fired by the police and the shooter.

As Louisville investigators piece together what led up to a mass shooting inside a downtown bank that left five people dead, several victims remain hospitalized, including a police officer in critical condition after a shootout with the 25-year-old gunman.

The bank sits on the fringe of Louisville’s developing downtown business district, state Sen. Gerald Neal, who represents the district where the shooting happened, told CNN. He said that he wouldn’t expect anything to happen at this location.

A large police presence in the area as well as shattered glass at the entrance of Old National Bank are shown in a video taken by CNN affiliate WDRB.

A local man told CNN affiiliate WLKY he got a call from his wife, who works at Old National Bank, who said there was an active shooter and she was locked in a vault inside the bank. The man, Caleb Goodlett, called 911 but officers were already aware of the shooting.

Curd said, “I saw people running and a few others got out of their car and began to run as well.” “Then I heard police yelling and telling people there was a shooter at the bank and to back away.”

The Louisville City Firefighter, Nickolas Wilt, was shot by the Louisville Police, according to a Twitter Post by the Kentucky Governor

The Louisville metro area, located along Kentucky’s border with Indiana, has a population of about 630,000 people as of the 2020 Census. The 300 block of East Main Street is bordered to the east by the minor league stadium Louisville Slugger Field and includes a bank, dentist’s office, a furniture store and the Louisville Ballet.

The governor of Kentucky said in a social media post that he was headed to the scene of the shooting. He asked for prayers for families impacted and the city of Louisville.

Buchheit-Sims described Sturgeon as “extremely intelligent” and others who knew him told CNN they were shocked to see the violence, which launched a massive police response in the heart of one of America’s most populated cities. According to prior writings, the man who killed two people at Old National Bank had trouble fitting in before he joined the team.

Four victims were identified by the chief, three of them were between the ages of 40 and 64. Gov. Andy Beshear said Elliott, a senior vice president at the bank, was one of his closest friends.

A police officer who graduated from the academy 10 days ago, Nickolas Wilt, is one of three people who are in critical condition. When he was confronted by Sturgeon on Monday, he was shot in the head and taken to the hospital where he underwent brain surgery.

Three of the injured are in non-critical condition and three have been released, the chief said. Five of the nine people injured had gunshot wounds, a hospital spokesperson said.

A Louisville, Kentucky, student named Connor Sturgeon had a hard time fitting in at school. He said he didn’t have a problem at school

He worked at Old National Bank in Louisville for three summers in a row before becoming a full time employee in June 2021.

The shooting was live-streamed, and it was taken down. Police are in possession of the video, according to the law enforcement source.

“I will say this, that the suspect was live streaming. That is sad. To know that that incident was out there and captured,” Gwinn-Villaroel said.

Earlier, Sturgeon played basketball and ran track for his high school in a Louisville suburb, and he was named a semifinalist for a National Merit Scholarship in 2015, according to local news reports.

“This is a total shock. He was a really good kid who came from a really good family,” said the classmate, who asked not to be identified and has not spoken with Sturgeon in recent years. “I can’t even say how much this doesn’t make sense. I am not sure what to make of it.

In a 2018 college essay posted to the website CourseHero, a user identified as a University of Alabama student named Connor Sturgeon wrote that he had had trouble fitting in at school.

The author said that in college he wanted to mature socially and become more self aware and better person, and that he was beginning to see improvement in this area.

While watching his son at the basketball camp, Todd Sturgeon had a thought that maybe he would rather spend more time with his own sons than other people.

Witness witness of a shooting at a Christian school in Tennessee, and a scalar gunfight between the Democrats and Republicans over gun control

Buchheit-Sims, who was attending the meeting virtually, watched in horror as the shooting played out on her computer screen, saying the incident “happened very quickly.”

Police announced that Deana Eckert, one of the hospitalized victims, died Monday. It was not known if she was among the three people in critical condition earlier in the day.

The source said the gunman left behind a note for his parents and a friend indicating he planned to carrying out a shooting at his workplace, though it is unclear when the message was found.

The 146th mass shooting of the year happened on Monday, just a few weeks after a shooting at a Christian school in Tennessee sparked a fierce fight between Democrats and Republicans over gun control.

Kentucky Gov. Beshear ordered flags across the state to be flown at half-staff for 48 hours, but some Democratic lawmakers were worried that expressions of mourning will come and go without meaningful gun violence solutions.

The Story of the Louisville Shooting that Saved David Yates: How he Founded the Old National Bank to Prevent Life in Louisville

This is not about politics. This is about life and death. This is about preventing tragedies. You may think this will never happen to you, never happen to any of your friends or loved ones. I used to think that way. No one in our state or city has that luxury anymore, which is a sad truth.

“Too many Americans are paying for the price of inaction with their lives. When will Republicans in Congress act to protect our communities?,” the president said in a tweet.

Members of the Old National Bank executive team, including CEO Jim Ryan, were in Louisville Monday on the heels of the shooting, the company said on Facebook.

“As we await more details, we are deploying employee assistance support and keeping everyone affected by this tragedy in our thoughts and prayers,” Ryan said in a statement that morning.

The shooting began about 30 minutes before the bank opens to the public. Bank staff were holding their morning meeting in a conference room when the shooter opened fire, Buchheit-Sims, the bank manager, said.

A federal law enforcement source told CNN that the gun used in the shooting was an assault rifle. The semi-automatic rifle is the most popular sporting rifle in the US, and 30% of gun owners reported having owned an AR-15 or similar-style rifle, according to the 2021 National Firearms Survey. The AR-15 and its offshoots have been the weapon of choice in many of the most horrific mass shootings in recent memory, including the Covenant school shooting in Nashville just two weeks ago.

Neal thinks the discussion about gun control in Kentucky will still be a challenge despite the shooting in the city.

“Last year, I survived a workplace shooting. The senior vice president of the Old National Bank was killed yesterday in a shooting that left five other people dead.

“Tommy was a great man. He wanted to find good people and place them in Positions to do great things. He embraced me when I was very young and interested in politics,” state Sen. David Yates told CNN. He wanted to build people up.

Craig Greenberg, the Mayor of Louisville, said that he spent the morning in the hospital with the wife of the man who had died.

Remembering Michael Elliott, the man and the girl that killed him in Louisville, Fla. During the mass shooting of September 11, 2009, two people were treated with life-sustaining injuries

He said it hits home for all of the families he knows because they know one of the victims.

Beshear remembered Elliott as an “incredible friend” and also called the others who were killed “amazing people” who will be missed and mourned by their communities.

Five patients remain in the University of Louisville Hospital. One patient was upgraded from critical to fair condition, a hospital spokesperson told CNN. Four are in stable and fair condition, one is in critical condition.

Three Louisville Metro PoliceD officers were among the nine patients that were treated at the University of Louisville Hospital. Three of those patients have been discharged.

“Our hearts are heavy, they are broken, and we are searching for answers,” they wrote. “Please keep the entire Barrick family in your prayers, including his wife, Jessica, and their two sweet children, who are students in our school.”

The bank employee had moved to Louisville from Henderson and had just started a new chapter in her life according to her aunt.

Tutt worked as the market executive for the commercial real estate division at Old National Bank in downtown Louisville.

The Louisville Mayor Shoots a Gun: Addressing the City’s Gun Violence Epidemic with the Darrow-Ballistic John Berman

Greenberg told John Berman about the incident, asking if they could help him. He pointed the gun at me and opened fire.

Forty people have been killed by guns so far this year in Louisville, Greenberg said Tuesday, delivering an impassioned plea for state and federal government to take action on gun violence or to cede that power to the city.

We have to act now. We need a short-term solution to stop this epidemic so there are fewer deaths on our streets, in our banks and in our schools. And for that, we need help. We need help from our friends in Frankfurt and help from our friends in Washington, DC,” the mayor added.

A law enforcement source told CNN that the shooter, who was killed in a police shootout, had been on the brink of being terminated when he entered the bank with a rifle.

Greenberg told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Tuesday that he had spoken with several local lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and planned to meet with them formally in the coming days to “talk about what we can do together.”

Greenberg, speaking during a news conference earlier Tuesday on the bank shooting, said that nobody has the “luxury” of thinking they won’t have a connection to gun violence at some point in their life.

A Kentucky grand jury indicted the man accused of shooting at Greenberg on attempted murder and first-degree wanton endangerment.

“I was fortunate that one of my brave teammates slammed the door shut. The suspect fled after they threw some desks on top of the door. We are very blessed to be here. All of us on the team are,” he said at the time on “New Day.”

Greenberg ran on a platform that prioritized public safety, justice, affordable housing, strengthening education, jobs and making Louisville “greener.”

Greenberg told Spectrum News 1 before he was elected that he needed to improve public safety, make it a safer city for residents and visitors, and more.

A trained lawyer, Greenberg is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Harvard Law School, according to his bio. He helped launch 21c Museum Hotels, a regional “multi-venue” contemporary art museum and hotel chain, and is a co-owner of Ohio Valley Wrestling.
