Poor Things, Oppenheimer, and Killers of theFlower Moon are the films that will be nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category
What will the Oscars reveal about the phenomenology of film and theater? A survey of nominees during the first year of the Academy Awards
The Q. and A.’s and cocktail parties are a wrap. The votes have been cast. On Tuesday, we will find out which movies and artists will have a chance at an Academy Award.
Several would-be nominees failed to make a mark when the nominations were announced on Tuesday morning. As your Projectionist, here’s my analysis of the morning’s biggest surprises and omissions.
“The Holdovers”: Alexander Payne’s dramedy about a history teacher, a cook and a student forced to stay behind at a boarding school over winter break has been coming on strong all awards season long. Both Paul Giamatti and Da-Vine Joy Randolph, who play the adults on campus, have won prizes and will be called upon to reveal their names on Tuesday. Aside from a possible best picture nod there may be ones for directing and screenplay as well.

The academy has always been able to get young actresses recognized: 7 of the 10 actresses recognized this year are under the age of 40. The male categories does not have the same interest as the female categories. The nominees for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor were over 40, further proving that the Oscars prefer grizzled men if they want to be taken seriously.
For the first time in Oscar history, three of the best-picture nominees were directed by women: “Barbie,” Celine Song’s “Past Lives” and Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall.” Still, that landmark moment could have been lost in the furor if the directors branch had put forth a lineup made up entirely of men, as many pundits feared it might. Though Gerwig and Song were both snubbed for best director, at least the category found room for Triet, who’d previously won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for her twisty legal drama.
The Golden Globes made it clear that the Oscars are going to be a good place for the Academy to shock us with its votes in the next two decades, and that surprises weren’t out of the question this year.
During a brief livestream this morning, actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid announced the nominees for this year’s Academy Awards, and while the presentation began with an unexpected Best Supporting Actor nomination for Sterling K. Brown’s performance in American Fiction, this year’s crop of buzzy frontrunners still loomed large in the overall pool of potential winners. The nomination for Brown, Jeffrey Wright’s Best Actor nod, and nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, Original Score, and Best Picture ultimately brought American Fiction’s potential Oscar tally up to five.
And while Da’Vine Joy Randolph has seemed to be an odds-on favorite for Best Supporting Actress up to this point, Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks, America Ferrera, and Jodie Foster could also end up taking the category. With its nine nominations including Best Picture, Production Design, Costume Design, and Adapted Screenplay, Barbie’s also going to be one to watch, and with the film’s “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?” both being up for awards, we can expect to hear some rather inspired performances of the songs when the Oscars airs on March 10th.
Both Martin Scorsese’s Osage epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Frankenstein riff “Poor Things” were also widely celebrated. “Poor Things” and “Killers of the Moon” both received nominations for the Academy Awards.
Best actress was also closely contested. Annette Bening and Carey Mulligan were nominated, along with Stone. That left out Margot Robbie, the star of “Barbie,” and Fantasia Barrino from “The Color Purple.”
The best actor category was one of the most competitive. In the end, the nominees were Murphy, Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”), Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”) and Colman Domingo (“Rustin”). Ian McKellen became the second openly gay man to be nominated for a film role when he was nominated for “gods and monsters”.
Nolan’s three-hour opus, viewed as the best picture frontrunner, received nods for best picture; Nolan’s direction; acting nominations for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt; and multiple honors for the sweeping craft of the J. Robert Oppenheimer drama. Nolan has never won an Academy Award nor a best picture award, despite being considered the bigcanvas auteur of his era. This, though, could be his year.
The best director field left Gerwig out. In the year 2018, she was nominated for a best director award. At the time, Gerwig was just the fifth woman nominated for the award. Jane Campion and Chloé Zhao have been the best director since then. Before those wins, Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker,” in 2010) was the only woman to win the Oscar’s top filmmaking honor.
The first Native American to be nominated for a best actress Oscar was “Killers of the Flower Moon” starLily Gladstone. For the 10th time, Scorsese was nominated for best director. Leonardo DiCaprio, though, was left out of best actor. The late Robbie Robertson, who died in August, also became the first Indigenous person nominated for best score.
“Poor Things,” a dark Victorian era fantasy about a woman’s sexual awakening, received nominations for director Yorgos Lanthimos, Emma Stone’s leading performance, and a lot of other stuff.
“Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Poor things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “The Holdovers,” “Maestro,” “American Fiction,” “Past Lives” and “Anatomy of a Fall” were nominated for best picture.
The AP’s “20 days in Mariupol” and Mstyslav Chernov’s harrowing chronicle of the besieged Ukrainian city were both nominated for an Oscar. It was nominated for best documentary, along with “Four Daughters,” “Bobi Wine: The People’s President,” “The Eternal Memory” and “To Kill a Tiger.”
The Academy Awards in Los Angeles: Jimmy Kimmel and The Prisoner’s Inevitable Case of “Mazetro”, a Popstar of the Screen
“Society of the Snow,” (Spain); “The Zone of Interest,” (United Kingdom); “The Teachers’ Lounge” (Germany); “Io Capitano” (Italy) ; “Perfect Days” (Japan)
Sterling K. Brown, “American Fiction”; Robert De Niro, “Killers of the Flower Moon”; Robert Downey Jr., “Oppenheimer”; Ryan Gosling, “Barbie”; Mark Ruffalo, “Poor Things”
Emily Blunt, “Oppenheimer”; Danielle Brooks, “The Color Purple”; America Ferrera, “Barbie”; Jodie Foster, “Nyad”; Da’Vine Joy Randolph, “The Holdovers”
The best-picture collection of films played in theaters for a minimum of a month and included “Mazetro”, which became the first film to break the $1 billion dollar mark on opening weekend. Netflix came away with the most nominations of any studio with 18, but industry consensus has, for now, turned back to believing cinemas play a vital role in the rollout of most movies. Apple and Amazon, which in 2022 acquired MGM, have each made theatrical a priority.
Historically, blockbusters have helped fueled Oscar ratings. The Academy Awards are vulnerable through the pile-up of award shows and the Barbenheimer presence could help lift the telecast on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel is returning as host, with the ceremony moved up an hour, to 7 p.m. EST.
“American Fiction”; “Anatomy of a Fall”; “Barbie”; “The Holdovers”; “Killers of the Flower Moon”; “Maestro”; “Oppenheimer”; “Past Lives”; “Poor Things”; “The Zone of Interest”
