The experts understand that generative Artificial Intelligence is poised to change the information landscape but they are still learning how that will happen. Problems that have long plagued tech platforms—like mis- and disinformation, scammy or hateful content—are likely to be amplified, despite the guardrails that companies say they’ve put in place.

The global electorate now has to contend with this new tech. Artificial intelligence can be used to write speeches or answer questions about a candidate’s policy. But we’ve also seen AI used to humiliate female politicians and make world leaders appear to promote the joys of passive-income scams. AI has been used to deploy bots and even tailor automated texts to voters.

The rest of the world has an election year going on right now, but American’s have their eye on November. India, the world’s largest democracy, is wrapping up its vote; South Africa and Mexico are both heading to the polls this week; and the EU is ramping up for its parliamentary elections in June. There are more people online in this year’s election than ever before.
