What is the term TikTok Ultimatum?

Joe Biden’s White House Press Briefing on the Senate’s Decree on the Law of TikTok, a Stranger’s Life, or a Problem of the National Security Council

It happened so quickly, especially for Congress, which is very slow. A couple of weeks ago, the House passed a bill that will force TikTok to find an American owner or be banned for six months. And what happened was it was going to get sent to the Senate, the Senate wasn’t too happy with it. Senator Maria Cantwell was kind of in support but she wanted to lengthen that timeframe to about nine months. Now, after some negotiations between the House and the Senate, they included that language, lengthening that timeline. The Senate voted very quickly Tuesday night to send it to the President, after the House voted again on it, attached to a foreign aid bill.

Barely an hour after the Senate passed its TikTok bill Tuesday night, President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign was posting new content to the platform. In a video that was posted at 10 pm, Biden appeared with a labor group and smiled ear to ear.

The administration or campaign doesn’t appear to have a plan for Biden to address it. I reached out to the White House after the Wednesday speech to see if there was anything we could expect from the president in the future. The National Security Council directed me to Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, at the White House press briefing. I did not get a clear answer when I pinged the Biden campaign.

WIRED Politics Lab Is Here. What Does It Mean? A Conversation with Laura Feiger, Makena Kelly, and Andrew Elliotter

“I think it’s probably smart to not center it, but it means there’s no counterprogramming, which I think allows for some of the conspiracies to go unchecked,” the user behind the X account @organizermemes told me over DMs Wednesday afternoon. It is possible that doing that would have had an affect on the issue.
