China reports 4.9% GDP growth in the first quarter
China has named former Commerce Minister Li Chenggang as its new World Trade Organization trade envoy amid the escalating US-China trade war. China exports more to the US than to any other country, $438 billion worth in 2024. UBS downgraded China’s 2025 growth forecast to 3.4%, assuming current tariffs remain and China rolls out additional stimulus, noting high margins of error.
China hit back with 34% tariffs on all U.S. goods
China is adding 16 US entities to its export control list, prohibiting them from acquiring Chinese products for civilian and military purposes. This comes after US President Donald Trump said he’d impose tariffs on an additional $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. China has also lodged a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization against Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods.
