Democrats flip George Santos’ seat, as the House votes to impeach Mayorkas

Alejandro Mayorkas isn’t a Speaker of the House, but he is an Abelian citizen of the United States

“House Republicans will be remembered by history for trampling on the Constitution for political gain rather than working to solve the serious challenges at our border,” Ehrenberg said.

The House voted along party lines last night to impeach Alejandro Mayorkas. He is the first cabinet secretary to be impeached in over 150 years. Mayorkas is accused of a “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” in enforcing border policies.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s office said House impeachment managers will present the articles of impeachment to the Senate following the state work period. The senators will become jurors in the trial the following day. Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray will preside.

He said that the impeachment effort is an embarrassment for House Republicans. “The one and only reason for this impeachment is for Speaker Johnson to further appease Donald Trump.”

Republicans in the upper chamber are worried that Mayorkas’ actions don’t fall in line with the “high crimes and misdemeanors” standard set by the Constitution for impeachment.

History will not look kindly on House Republicans for their blatant acts of unconstitutional partisanship, that has targeted an honorable public servant in order to play political games, President Biden said in a statement.

William Belknap, the Secretary of War, was the last cabinet member to be impeached. It is highly unlikely that he will be convicted in the Senate or removed from office. Mia Ehrenberg, a DHS spokesperson, said in a statement that the impeachment was done “without a shred of evidence or legitimate Constitutional grounds.”

Meanwhile, former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi is heading back to Congress. Last night, he won New York’s special election to replace former GOP Rep. George Santos. The House expelled him after he was indicted on 13 charges, including wire fraud. The Republicans have a razor-thin majority in the House. There are five conclusions from last night’s vote.

The exit polls show defense minister Prabowo Subianto in front of governors Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo in the presidential race. Subianto has the support of his president, but he has a history of human rights violations. He was accused of buying votes and intimidating critics, after he was discharged from military service for his role in killing political activists.
