A jury ordered Trump to pay $83 million for defaming a columnist

The First Day of Defamation Trial against Donald J. Trump: Plaintiffs’ Counsel and the Attorney General’s Response to the Defamation

Asked by Alina Habba, his lawyer, if he ever instructed anyone to hurt Carroll, Trump said: “I just wanted to defend myself, my family and frankly, the presidency.”

During his campaign appearances in Iowa and New Hampshire, as well as to reporters in New York, Trump repeated his belief that the trial is election interference.

The jury awarded Carroll $65 million in punitive damages, $11 million for the damage to her reputation and another $7.3 million. Trump is very likely to appeal the verdict.

At the time, Trump’s Attorney General Bill Barr blocked the lawsuit, arguing Trump had made the comments in his official capacity as president. This caused the lawsuit to be stuck in court for several years.

Also in 2023, Biden’s Justice Department reversed course and allowed the first lawsuit on defamation to move forward. In part because of the 2023 decision that had found Trump liable for assault, Judge Kaplan ruled that defamation also happened in 2019 and that Trump is also liable.

During the first day of testimony, he was reprimanded by Judge Kaplan for making comments during Carroll’s time on the stand. Carroll’s lawyers twice flagged that they could hear him and the jury might be able to as well. Kaplan warned Trump that he could lose his right to be present.

Habba questioned the motives of the writer who sent the threats to her and the author of the praise and support that she received for her allegation.

On the Role of the Biden Cosmic Witch Hunt in the Search for Symmetry Breaking. The case of E. Jean Carroll

“Absolutely ridiculous!” said the statement. The whole Biden directed witch hunt focused on me and the republican party will be appealing, I fully agree with both verdicts.

A New York jury on Friday ordered former President Donald Trump to pay a total of $83.3 million to E. Jean Carroll for ruining her credibility as an advice columnist when he called her a liar after she accused him of sexual assault.
