It is easy to see that Palworld is a hit

Palworld: A Popemon with Guns: A Demonstration of the Making of the World with Artificial Intelligence (Mizobe, Art Impostor)

There are other claims that the world was made with artificial intelligence. Mizobe has made posts on X discussing AI and the potential for its use in game development. His company also has another game in early access called AI: Art Impostor, where you must use the game’s “AI” art generation feature to create works of art that will fool other artists. But taken together, these instances don’t prove that Palworld was made with AI and so far, there’s no evidence that it has been.

The first game of this year is so crazy that it’s the most outrageous. Palworld, dubbed “Pokémon with guns” by the internet writ large, takes base elements of survival games like Rust and mixes them with collectible, edible little creatures for a satirical twist. (Yes, you can give your adorable companions machine guns to use.) Released Friday by Pocket Pair, Palworld had more than a million concurrent players on PC exploring the “Palapagos Island” and catching “Pals” during its opening weekend, according to SteamDB. The company claims it has already sold 5 million copies.

When you first load into Palworld, you create your character and then your world. I do appreciate that the tutorial is very good about explaining what it is you need to get started. There’s a robust survival guide that not only explains how the basic controls work but also offers tips on what to do first. And like any survival game, the first thing I wound up doing was punching trees and rocks.

Palworld’s announcement trailer released in 2021. It started generally enough, with a bright, colorful world populated with cute monsters that bear an almost uncomfortable resemblance to another game featuring cute, catchable creatures. Then there will be the AK-47s. In the beginning of the game, the tone was changed from the idea of catching cute monsters that will help you build your home to the idea of shooting them and using them as slaves. One of the most memorable moments from that first trailer was the image of a bunch of pals (the monsters are called pals) that look startlingly like Sprigatito, mournfully manufacturing assault rifles on an assembly line.

Palworld is a hit! Early Game Description: Picking up a pal in the workbench to catch a pokéball

It’s not hard to get caught up in catching friends, but you have to worry about other things first, like building your team. You need a special stone that you can either pick up from rock deposits or the ground to make a pokéball. Then you’ve gotta craft the workbench to craft the pokéball. After that, catching a pal works like it would in any other game: weaken it (with weapons, your fists, or another pal you’ve got on your team) then throw the ball to catch it. The game will tell you, based on how much you’ve weakened the pal, your likelihood of successfully catching it, which is a nice touch. But make sure you aim that ball precisely because if you’re off by one pixel, you’ll miss and lose your ball. This is especially frustrating in the early game because of all the work it takes to make the suckers in the first place.

The game has all of the features one would expect. There’s a hunger bar for your character, your pals have a hunger bar, and there’s even a hot / cold weather feature a la Tears of the Kingdom, so keep a torch handy or stay near campfires at night.

Setting up your base is very easy. Building a special structure will establish a base, and assigning any pals you’ve caught to that base will put them to work. If there are any resources within the base’s perimeter, your assigned pals will start harvesting them. Also, if you’re crafting within the base, whether it be tools or structures, your pals will bust out little hammers and help. You have to manage your pals carefully, providing them with shelter, food, and something to do.

How to survive in Palworld: Tips for surviving the first few hours of the Palworld game and eating kebabs during the early hours of release

You cannot accidentally get the same proportions on multiple models from a different game. Or at the very least, tracing them meticulously first,” said one game developer to VGC. The CEO of Pocket Pair denied the accusation, saying, “we make our games very serious, and we have no intention of violating the intellectual property of other companies.” If you would refrain from defaming the artists involved in Palworld I would appreciate it.

If you’re a fan of Pokémon, you’re likely already aware that the animals’ type—water, fire, ice, etc.—matters. The same rules apply to Palworld. It is in you best interests to gather a wide variety despite the fact that you have enough experience points for catching your first 10 of a specific Pal. Depending on the type, Pals can perform different jobs around your base.

If you build a Pal Box, that is where your first base camp will be. Open up the missions in the Pal Box to see what you need to build next in order to ramp up the level of your base. Did you pick up cool items while exploring that you don’t want to lose on a new adventure? Try storing them in the wooden box at your base.

You die in real life when you die in Palworld. It’s just joking! Self-preservation is important because you do drop everything on the spot when you die. In addition to eating the cooked Pal meat to stay full, be sure to build a fire at night so you don’t freeze to death. Though don’t get too close to the fire or you’ll burst into flames—a lesson we learned the hard way.

It is fun to catch cute Pals and put them to work at your base, but surviving the first few hours of Palworld is easier if you are willing to cook them up and eat them. Sure, you could technically do a vegan playthrough and survive just off berries, but what’s the fun in that? Early game recipes include grilled Chikipi and Lamball kebabs.

The game, currently in early access, is available for $30 on PC and Xbox. On its first day of availability, Palworld was added to Microsoft’s subscription service, Xbox Game Pass. Wondering about how to dive into the world of Palworld? We have some tips for beginners to get started on this peculiar adventure that we played during the opening hours.
