The new chips are for gaming laptops

The Titan 18 HX A14V: A Bummer at the Gates? An Intel 14th Gen CPU Comparison to AMD’s 700-series Processors

The name of the Titan implies that it should be very Extra. I’d love to know who actually buys these kinds of halo laptops, which are simply not made for mere mortals and seem to be a bit of a dying breed — the days of laptops like the absurd Acer Predator 21 X are long gone now.

The new Intel 14th Gen Core i9-9900HX processor is accompanied by an RTX 4080 or 4090 GPU and an 18-inch Mini LED display with 3840 x 2400 resolution and 120hz refresh.

Being such a beefy laptop, it has room for plenty of ports, with two Thunderbolt 4 / USB-C ports, three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, HDMI 2.1, and a full-size SD card reader. The costs of everything is eye-watering, but it also weighs a hefty 7.94 pounds. And like other new MSI laptops, it has AI-based performance profiles that promise to optimize settings based on whether you’re gaming or doing other tasks like video conferencing. I think most of the people who will buy this thing are going to play games with it and won’t be moving it around. This desktop replacement machine is meant to mostly live in one spot and play games as it lets its colorful peacock feathers of RGB lighting shine.

The Titan 18 HX A14V is one of the most garish and expensive laptops on the market, but that is only one of the reasons why it is so over the top.

The 13th Gen chips from Intel haven’t been compared to any of their predecessors. We found that the 14th Gen chips were mostly a refresh in name and nature and not much performance compared to the best desktop gaming CPUs. We’ll have to wait on reviews to see exactly how Intel manages on mobile this year.

Much like the K variant, the Core i7-14700 ships with 20 cores in total (eight performance / 12 efficiency). The top Core i5, i7, and i9 chips support up to DDR5-5600 and 192GB of memory, and all are backward-compatible with existing Intel 600- and 700-series motherboards.

Intel has chosen to compare its latest Core i9-14900HX with AMD’s Ryzen 9 7945HX — the first mobile processor to feature AMD’s 3D V-Cache. At 1080p, Intel’s i9-14900HX beats the 7945HX in most of Intel’s tests, with the exception of Horizon Zero Dawn, Cyberpunk 2077, and Red Dead Redemption 2.
