4 people had the power to fire Sam Altman
Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and the State of AI: The Microsoft-OPEN Experiment to Disrupt Corporate Intelligence
Altman was fired from OpenAI on Friday, after the board said it “no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.” A weekend of negotiations yielded an announcement that both Sam Altman and Greg Brockman would be joining Microsoft as part of its new advanced artificial intelligence team.
An attempt to get rid of the board and replace them with a new group of people ran into difficulties Sunday over the role of the existing directors in choosing their replacements, according to the report.
Nathan Benaich, general partner of Air Street Capital and coauthor of the “State of AI Report,” says OpenAI’s corporate structure has proven to be at odds with the need to support cutting-edge research through huge amounts of equity investment. He believes that physics won the experiment because it was an experiment to defy corporate physics.
In a Vanity Fair interview, which was published in 2015, Sam Altman said he had no experience with nonprofits. He said he was not sure how it would go.
There are a lot of us looking forward to working with the new leadership team at the OAI. Sam Altman and Greg Brockman will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced artificial intelligence research team.
They had been working with Microsoft to make the Maia chip. Microsoft downplays the impact of the Maia chip on its partnership with NVIDIA, but the company is working on a second generation of the chip.
Microsoft has formed a new research team with the help of Altman and Brockman. Last week, Microsoft revealed that it had built a custom chip to train large language models in order to avoid reliance on Nvidia. Microsoft has built an Arm-based cpu for cloud workload. The custom chips are designed to power the data centers.
In the hours thereafter, Microsoft’s CEO said that they would be hiring Greg Brockman and Altman to head a new advanced Artificial Intelligence research team.
