Biden will be meeting with leaders from several countries this week

The Stans at the United Nations: U.S. leadership, Ukraine’s invasion and the case against alleged crimes against Russia in the Hague

President Biden will join leaders from five Central Asian nations, who call themselves the “Stans”, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly next week.

It’s part of a busy agenda at the UN, where Biden will emphasize U.S. leadership around the world in his annual address. Sullivan said that they put a lot of points on the board.

Biden is going to New York to meet with Netanyahu. While the two leaders have met many times during the course of their long political careers, this is the first time they will have met since Netanyahu won his election last fall.

Then on Thursday, Biden will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House – a meeting that comes as the White House asks Congress for $24 billion more in funding to help Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s invasion.

Congress approved more than $112 billion in aid for Ukraine in four spending bills last year. The new request is wrapped up in a bigger fight about government spending that threatens to shut down the government at the end of the month, as some Republicans in the House pushed back against adding to that.

“We believe that whatever other to-ing and fro-ing there is in the legislative context, that at the end of the day the United States will be able to continue to deliver for Ukraine,” Sullivan said.

The International Court of Justice in The Hague holds hearings this week on a case Ukraine filed alleging Russia abused international law in its claimed reasons for invading Ukraine in February 2022. On Monday and Tuesday, Russia and Ukraine will present their arguments.

The Russia Foreign Minister’s New York Address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on February 17 – 23rd, 2022

The reasons for the dismissal of the deputy defense ministers are being watched by analysts. The reshuffle comes weeks after the government fired its defense minister.

Starting Tuesday, the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Biden are anticipated to speak on opening day. The Ukrainian leader is expected to meet with Biden as well as some other people this week. Russia’s foreign minister is in New York for the UNGA.

Kim said he’d support Moscow’s fight against “imperialism” when he met with Putin in Russia. Putin offered to help North Korea put a satellite in the sky. The United States and South Korea told the leaders that they could be doing a weapons deal.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution calling the Belarusian government an “accomplice” in Russia’s war in Ukraine. Russia used to base military and mercenary forces on the nation’s territory to stage its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, while the country was still bordering Russia.

The nation’s military said that Ukraine had taken back eastern villages. After the loss of the villages of Andriivka and Klishchiivka, Ukrainian forces could potentially move deeper into enemy lines around Bakhmut, which was captured by Russian forces in May.
