It was the first time that the name ‘Queen Camilla’ was used on a coronation invitation

The Queen’s Consort Invitation and the Coronation Service: Camilla and the Princess Consequences of Diana and Charles

The text for the intricate invitation that was printed on a recycled card has an illustration of a border of wild flowers and the Green Man from British folklore.

“Queen consort,” on the other hand, refers to the wife of a reigning king. She still holds the title and the crown, but doesn’t have the same political or military powers as a king. This describes Camilla, who will be crowned alongside Charles at the ceremony.

The invitation will be sent to “2,000 guests who will form the congregation in Westminster Abbey” for the service on May 6, according to a press release from the palace.

Prince George, Charles’ grandson and heir to the throne, will be one of eight boys chosen to “attend Their Majesties during the Coronation Service,” the release wrote. According to the release, the group includes three grandsons.

The portrait was taken last month in Buckingham Palace by British photographer Hugo Burnand, who took their wedding photos in 2005.

After Diana’s marriage to Charles, they continued their relationship past that point. Princess Diana famously said “there were three of us in this marriage,” and many of her admirers have blamed Camilla for breaking it up.

When Charles assumed the throne, there was much speculation as to what title she would take. In 2005, Clarence House issued a statement saying that she would be known as “Princess Consort” when Charles took the throne. Some in the palace at the time felt the public wasn’t ready for Camilla to take the title of queen that had been destined for Diana.

But attitudes towards Camilla have softened over the years. According to a CNN poll, one in four Britons have grown to like her more now that she is queen.

A “King George VI and Queen Elizabeth” moment of U.K. history, and the “Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter”

The President told Biden during the call that he will attend the event and wished Charles good luck.

That’s raised some eyebrows, in large part because of Camilla and Charles’ controversial relationship and the palace’s previous stance on her position (more on all that below).

When you consider it, the monarchy is a point of contention for the family of the Prince Harry and the Queen, for example. The symbolics end up being very important.

In 2021, Queen Elizabeth appointed Camilla a “Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter,” the most senior order of knighthood in the British honors system.

Charles wants to assert his legitimacy and hers in the face of all the different criticisms they have had, she says. “So I don’t think that’s a bad thing, because I think that’s where it gets a fair amount of attention.”

Queen dowagers and queen mother are two examples of different types of queens in U.K. history.

Most of the mentions of those queens in news coverage were called simply that, she said. The 1937 invitation for King George VI was titled “King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.”

The final step toward removing Camilla from the throne: What do we need to know before deciding how to proceed with Charles’s monarchy?

The change is the final step in the process of undoing the conditions that the palace put on Camilla at the time of her marriage to Charles.

It is a sign of tremendous change to allow Charles to be the king even though he was divorced and married to a divorcee, as consort legitimating is no longer a part of modern marriage practices.

King Charles is reported to be focused on modernizing and “slimming down” the monarchy. Many Brits are waiting to see what that means for his reign since he has long been passionate about philanthropic causes.

Above all, Gullace says, the biggest unknown is how the monarchy will fare without Queen Elizabeth, who reigned over seven turbulent decades and “had something special about her.”

It remains to be seen whether Charles and Camilla have it too, she says, and how that might influence public opinion about the institution itself, which is already low among younger generations.

That is the big question that we are left with, she says. “We’ll see how well the coronation is received, how widely watched it is, and how Charles’s monarchy fares after that.”
