Crew-5 astronauts currently on the International Space Station have a transportation issue and are grappling with it. In December, a Russian Soyuz spacecraft that had been used to transport two cosmonauts and one NASA astronaut to the space station sprang a coolant leak. The replacement vehicle was launched on February 23, after the capsule was deemed unsafe. On Saturday it was received at the International Space Station.

The three crew members brought to the ISS in the fall had a leak in their cooling loop, so officials from both countries had to develop a new plan to get them back to Earth.

A normal return mission to Earth would not be viable due to the leak. It would still be available in the case of an emergency evacuation from the space station.

The new plan was to launch an uncrewed Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft to the ISS on Feb. 19, giving the astronaut and two cosmonauts a functional vessel to fly home in.

The Russian cargo ship Progress 82 was unpiloted when it was docked at the space station and experienced an unexplained depressurization.

Engineers at the Russian Mission Control Center near Moscow are investigating why the cargo vessel lost cooling and was delayed from launching, after discovering a leak on Progress 83.

According to the Russian state news agency, the permit for the replacement ship was issued on Monday by a state commission.

The Space Mission to Cape Canaveral, Florida, to Launch: Crew Dragon and the Space X Falcon 9 Rocket for the First Day of Mission Life

“Space cooperation has a very long history, and we are setting the example of how people should be living on Earth,” Fedyaev said during a news briefing on January 24.

He said that he has worked and trained with the Russian cosmonauts for over two decades. “Once you get to space it’s just one crew, one vehicle, and we all have the same goal.”

“After a thorough review of the data and ground system, NASA and SpaceX determined there was a reduced flow back to the ground TEA-TEB catch tank due to a clogged ground filter,” according to the NASA update.
