A family member of a lone actor attacked by a landlord: Wadea Czuba, a boy charged with hate crimes
“We need to be on the lookout for lone actors who have been inspired by recent events to commit violence of their own, even if it is just for a short period of time like a few weeks or even a month,” he said.
Authorities did not identify the victims. The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said the victims were a mother and son. The organization said the boy was American.
Wadea and his mother were attacked by the family’s landlord because they were Muslim. Czuba has been charged with hate crimes.
The organization hosted a news conference on Sunday where the boy’s father appeared. The group said the father had shared text messages with them from the mother describing the incident.
A man who stabbed a Palestinian American boy and a woman in unincorporated Plainfield Township, Illinois, was charged with a hate crime
Deputies responding to the scene found the suspect, identified as Joseph M. Czuba, sitting outside the residence with a cut on his forehead. He was taken to the hospital for further treatment.
The woman was transported to the hospital in serious condition, with over a dozen stab wounds to her body, and is expected to survive. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital, the sheriff’s office said. An autopsy found the boy was stabbed 26 times.
Both victims, a 32-year-old woman and 6-year-old boy, were found with multiple stab wounds to their chest, torso and upper extremities, inside a residence in the unincorporated Plainfield Township outside of Chicago, the Will County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on social media.

The mourners gathered outside Chicago for the funeral of Wadea Al-Fa youme, the young Palestinian American boy who was murdered in his home last week in an apparent hate crime.
Wadea’s mother, 32-year-old Hanaan Shahin, was seriously wounded in the Saturday morning attack in unincorporated Plainfield Township but is expected to survive.
A prayer service was held at a Bridgeview, Ill., mosque Monday afternoon, drawing dozens of mourners, some of whom waved Palestinian flags, WBEZ’s Anna Savchenko reported.
Muslim faith leaders who addressed the crowd decried what they considered the biased news coverage of the Israel-Hamas war, Savchenko noted, and condemned the stabbing as an assault on all Muslims.
“When this individual said, ‘You Muslims must die,’ this was a message not to the boy and the mother,” Ahmed Rehab, executive director of the Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said at a news conference. This was to all of us. We were all stabbed that day.”

The US warned against increased threats against the Jewish and Muslim community because of the war between Israel and Hamas, which began one week ago.
Wadea’s killing drew widespread condemnation from elected officials, from President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden to Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, who attended the funeral.
Czuba made his first appearance in the Will County court, where he was read the eight felony counts he faces, including murder and hate crimes.
Prosecutors at the hearing said Czuba had been listening to news about the war between Israel and Hamas on conservative talk radio and grew increasingly worried about his safety, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Czuba’s wife claimed that her husband believed Shahin was going to call Palestinian friends to harm them, the outlet reported.
