Decades and even centuries of fire suppression — the long-held policy of the U.S. Forest Service and other agencies — also fed the wildfires. Many habitats across the Western U.S. have had frequent burns to clear away excess fuel, and Indigenous communities have used fire to keep those habitats open as well.
