It is far too soon to say that DeSantis is done

Mr. DeSantis’s strategy so far this year may have also increased the likelihood of big swings. There are two theories for defeating a former president, one of which is called Trumpism without Trump. The early days of the DeSantis campaign are seen as a version of Trumpism without Trump. If his campaign has done anything, it’s to narrow any disagreement with Mr. Trump — even to a fault. The former president hasn’t been made explicit or implicit in Mr. DeSantis’ case. Perhaps worse, he hasn’t punched back after being attacked.

In an email to The Verge Tuesday, Lindsey Curnutte, a DeSenatis spokeswoman confirmed the event. The company responded to the request with the customary poop emojis auto-reply.

David Sacks, a former product leader and tech investor, is said to moderate the discussion during the announcement part of the event. Soon after, the DeSantis campaign is expected to put out a formal video before beginning their campaign trail after Memorial Day.

DeSantis has been lightly critical of Trump’s governing style. He implied problematic conduct and said that he doesn’t know what goes into paying for a porn star’s silence over an alleged affair.

As many as half a dozen others are considering getting in, including former Trump Vice President Mike Pence, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

There are cautionary tales of GOP candidates who have risen and fallen sharply. Bush, a former Florida governor and political scion, and Walker, the Wisconsin Gov., had fleeting moments atop the polls during the 2016 Republican primary campaign.

The larger the field, the better for Trump if Republican voters don’t coalesce around a different candidate.

And if DeSantis, 44, is supposed to be tomorrow’s Trump, a youthful refurbishment of the 76-year-old former president, why does he seem so yesteryear? There is something anti-modern about the Florida governor, especially his lack of flair, his emotional remove and his hair style. He’s more T-Bird than Tesla, though even that’s too generous, as he’s also more sedan than coupe.

Another point that candidates have not made a bigger issue is the fact that Trump is constitutionally limited. If he were to win in 2024, he could only serve four more years.

The brutal attacks — from the serious, relating to taxes, Social Security and Medicare to the shallow, mocking DeSantis for how he reportedly ate pudding — have shown Trump is willing to do whatever it takes to win.

That was before the onslaught from Trump’s allies. There have been countless attacks that have gone unanswered and left DeSantis allies wringing their hands.

Trump’s continued lies about the 2020 presidential election he lost, defeats racked up by candidates he backed in swing states and competitive districts, plus the myriad investigations in multiple states was giving Republicans pause about the 76-year-old former president.

Money is something that DeSantis does have. The super PAC supporting him expects to have a $200 million budget in spite of the fact that he has $90 million left from his reelection bid for governor last year.

It’s not an easy task to go from congressman to governor. DeSantis was helped greatly in the GOP primary because of Trump’s endorsement — and he clung to Trump to initially win the governorship.

The Campaign for Donald J. Trump During the COVID-19 Pandemic: What Happened to Don DeSantis?

He used an ad to show him playing and reading to his children, helping them to “build the wall” with paper blocks and reading from The Art of the Deal, because he loves the part where Trump says, “You’re fired.”

DeSantis became one of the loudest voices defiantly opposing the expert guidance of Dr. Anthony Fauci during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic; he pulled stunts, shipping migrants to Martha’s Vineyard and other liberal enclaves and cities run by Democrats; and DeSantis has pugilistically taken on universities, school districts and even Disney for how sexual orientation, gender identity and race are taught in schools.

His right-wing, Trumpian tendencies have put him at odds, at times, with his potential base of Republican supporters, the kinds of Republicans who would be open to voting for someone other than Trump. It’s hard to out-Trump Trump, and the people inclined to go a different way than Trump in the primary, tend to be college-educated and wealthier Republicans, according to the February NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll.

He walked that back after criticism. He said that it was a messy situation and that Russia’s Putin was a war criminal. But Russia did not have a right to go in to Crimea or to go in February of 2022. That should be clear.

DeSantis’s decision comes after months of speculation, but Trump hasn’t waited to begin the attacks. Trump and his allies have spent millions of dollars bashing the Florida governor and his polling numbers have cratered, putting him in a deeper hole than they had anticipated.

He will not come back if he mounts a comeback. The campaign has decided not to broadcast his announcement live on television in favor of a feature that I don’t even know how to use, but it will make up for it when he does. It’s not clear if a perfectly run Republican campaign would be good enough for Donald J. Trump if he survives his legal challenges.
