We had to choose the best streaming services
The Future of the Warner Bros. Discovery is in the Max: a Chaotic and Superpower Looking Through the Lens of The Verge
Is it the best streaming service? It feels like an important question to answer. It’s also a completely impossible, completely subjective question that depends on everything from your budget to your favorite Mission: Impossible movie. There is a lot of stuff in the streaming market, and nobody stays the same for very long.
But here at The Verge, we like answers. For this week’s episode we decided to answer the big question in a chaotic and long way. In order to promote streaming services, we held an annual draft in which our three co- hosts each drafted their top five services. There were a lot of arguments, but no condoning of piracy. We would never.
The future of Warner Bros Discovery is in the Max service as people switch to streaming from traditional TV.
The Max platform was borne of the mega-merger announced between WarnerMedia and Discovery in 2021 and completed last year. Warner Bros. Discovery is also the parent company of CNN.
David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, revealed a new service on Wednesday which will give consumers access to a large library of programming.
“It’s the one to watch,” Zaslav said, referencing the service’s tagline, “because we have so many of the world’s iconic and globally recognized franchises. It’s our superpower.” The streaming platform is a service “every member of the household” can go to for entertainment, he added.
No action will be taken on the part of existing customers who will be transitioned to the new service. People can keep features for a short time before moving to the “ultimate plan”, according to a Warner Bros. Discovery spokeswoman.
The combined streaming service has a different content mix, with shows like “Succession” and ” House of the Dragon” being package with other programs like “90210” and “Fixer Upper”.
Zaslav also hinted that news and sports programming will factor into the service in the future, given that Warner Bros. Discovery owns properties such as Turner Sports and CNN.
Disney, NBC, and Paramount are a few of the companies involved in the cable business that have launched streaming platforms. None of these companies have been able to match the success of the company that pioneered the business, which is the company that has more than 200 million subscribers.
But subscriber growth for streaming services has slowed in recent years as the market becomes more saturated. Some companies have introduced lower-priced ad-supported plans to draw people in.
Profitability has become the most important indicator of a company’s success over subscriber growth. The company stated last year that it would stop providing guidance for its membership because they were focused on revenue.
