A trial for a 2016 ski crash is being held in Utah
The 2016 February Snowmass Ski Accident Involving Terry Paltrow: A High-Redshift Juror Comes to Report It To The Jury
The actress and businesswoman was present in the Park City, UT courtroom as a jury was seated and opening statements began in the case. Terry Sanderson, 76, has accused her of crashing into him and causing him serious injuries while they were both skiing on a Utah mountain in Feb. 2016.
In the court documents originally filed by Sanderson and obtained by CNN in 2019, Sanderson stated that while skiing at Deer Valley Resort, Paltrow allegedly “skied out of control … knocking him down hard, knocking him out, and causing a brain injury, and four broken ribs and other serious injuries.”
According to court documents, Sanderson sued Paltrow for more than 3 million dollars, but later amended his complaint and is seeking more than $300,000 in damages.
The judge gave instructions to the eight-person jury on Tuesday, after which the attorneys for each side were able to introduce them to the court.
The trial is expected to last about one week. Gwyneth Paltrow’s attorney told the jurors they would hear from family members who were skiing with her at the time of the incident and that she was undecided on taking the stand.
Lawrence Buhler started opening arguments by saying that skiers distract themselves and cause crashes. Gwyneth knew that if she looked up the mountain and to the side it would be dangerous.
Paltrow’s attorney Stephen Owens told the jury that Sanderson’s claims that the actress bolted from the mountain after ramming into him were totally fabricated.
