Binance Co-founder Changpeng Zhao has been sentenced in the US to four months in prison for securities fraud. Zhao had pleaded guilty to a single count of securities fraud in March. Earlier, FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison for defrauding investors of about $1 billion. “The goal is to stop…next financial institution CEO from being afraid of anti-money-laundering regulations,” Richman said.
Changpeng’s sentence was to 4 months in prison
Binance Co-founder Changpeng Zhao was sentenced to 36 months in prison for violating the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA). The US prosecutors said Zhao prioritised Binance’s growth and profits over compliance with US laws and regulations. Prosecutors added that Binance allowed sanctions violations of more than $898 million. Zhao had admitted to violating the law as required of a financial institution executive.

The firm claimed that ex-DWAC executive Orlando Swider, who left the company in 2018, received “stolen information” from another employee. DWAC was valued at more than $5 billion despite reporting just over $4 million in revenue in 2023.
