But their competitors do not seem to have the same slowness. While Google has provided limited access to LaMDA in a protected Test Kitchen app, other companies have been offering an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord with their own chatbots and image generators. The most consequential release yet was Openai’s latest version of its text generation technology, which spits out coherent essays, poems, plays, songs, and more in a few weeks. The chatbot has become an international obsession because of its wide availability, and millions of people tinkered with it and shared its amazing responses, as well as a source of wonder and fear. Will the college essay be killed by ChatGPT? Destroy traditional internet search? Put millions of copywriters, journalists, artists, songwriters, and legal assistants out of a job?
After listening to his peers praise the generativeai tool chatGtp, he toyed with it to write an essay on capitalism. Cobbs wanted the tool to produce a thoughtful response to his specific research directions, so it was used to generate long-form written content in response to user input. Instead, he was presented with a generic and poorly written paper.
To find out, I spoke to Sandra Wachter, a professor of technology and regulation at the Oxford Internet Institute who speaks eloquently about how to build transparency and accountability into algorithms. I asked her what that might look like for a system like ChatGPT.
This combination of attributes makes the tool difficult for teachers to use. Many teachers said that software made it difficult for students to write essays at home. If that is your ability, then why bother writing an assignment at all? It’s unclear if students can outwit the detection systems or if they’ll still be able to generate their own text.
Sandra Wachter: This will start to be a cat-and-mouse game. The tech is not good enough to fool a law teacher, but it may be good enough to convince someone who isn’t in that area. I wonder if technology will get better over time to where it can trick me too. We might need technical tools to make sure that what we’re seeing is created by a human being, the same way we have tools for deepfakes and detecting edited photos.

There are less artifacts and telltale signs for text than there are for deepfaked imagery. Any reliable solution may require the construction of a solution by the company that is generating the text.
You do need to have buy-in from whoever is creating that tool. But if I’m offering services to students I might not be the type of company that is going to submit to that. Even if you put something on, they can be taken away. Very tech-savvy groups will probably find a way. But there is an actual tech tool [built with OpenAI’s input] that allows you to detect whether output is artificially created.
A couple of things. First, I would really argue that whoever is creating those tools put watermarks in place. And maybe the EU’s proposed AI Act can help, because it deals with transparency around bots, saying you should always be aware when something isn’t real. But companies might not want to do that, and maybe the watermarks can be removed. So then it’s about fostering research into independent tools that look at AI output. In education we have to be more inventive with how we assess students and write papers. What kind of questions can we ask that are less easily fakeable? There is a combination of tech and human oversight that helps reduce the disruption.
The New York City Department of Education has blocked access to ChatGPT on its networks and devices over fears the AI tool will harm students’ education.
The ban was due to the concern of the safety and accuracy of the material, as well as negative impacts on student learning, according to a spokesman for the department.
The tool is good at giving quick and easy answers to questions, but it lacks critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are needed for academic and lifelong success.
The failures common to all of the most recent artificial intelligence language systems are related to the large language models, or LLMs. It is trained on data stolen from the internet and it often repeats and amplifies prejudices like sexism and racism. The system is prone to making up information and presenting it as fact.
The open-access user interface and ability to answer questions in human-like language is the most revolutionary quality. The tool is able to discuss a wide range of topics, using data from the internet, but can perform a number of linguistic tricks, such as writing in different styles and genres.
Others believe the education system will simply have to adapt to the technology like it has done with other disruptive technologies. New testing standards could focus more on in-person examinations, for example, or a teacher could ask students to interrogate the output of AI systems (just as they are expected to interrogate sources of information found online).
Artificial intelligence-generated writing is banned in the near future by other education systems. Already some online platforms — like coding Q&A site Stack Overflow — have banned ChatGPT overs fear the tool will pollute the accuracy of their sites.
Most of the toys Google demoed on the pier in New York showed the fruits of generative models like its flagship large language model, called LaMDA. It can answer questions and work with creative writers to make stories. Other projects can help to produce 3D images from text suggestions or even help to make videos by creating storyboard-like suggestions on a scene-by-scene basis. But a big piece of the program dealt with some of the ethical issues and potential dangers of unleashing robot content generators on the world. The company took pains to emphasize how it was proceeding cautiously in employing its powerful creations. The most important statement was given by Douglas Eck, a principal scientist. He said thatrative artificial intelligence models are powerful. It is important that we acknowledge the risks that technology poses if we do not take care, which is why we have been slow to release them. And I’m proud we’ve been slow to release them.”
Every month, there is at least one innovation emerging from the computer science behind generative artificial intelligence. How they are used will affect our future. Topol thinks that the end of this is crazy. It is just beginning.
They are not sure about the answers to those questions. There is one thing that is. Granting open access to these models has kicked off a wet hot AI summer that’s energizing the tech sector, even as the current giants are laying off chunks of their workforces. A decade later, the movement was to mobile. generative artificial intelligence is going to be a big shift in the 2020s. Many start-ups will come into existence this year with business plans based on the systems’ API’s. The cost of churning out generic copy will go to zero. By the end of the decade, video-generation systems may well be the dominant feature of TikTok. They may not be anywhere as good as the innovative creations of talented human beings, but the robots will quantitatively dominate.
Using Artificial Intelligence to Edit Research Papers: A Case Study of a Bioinformatics Student at Rutgers University
In the final month of his sophomore year, a Rutgers University student decided that Artificial Intelligence might be dumber than humans.
The emergence of concerns relating to improper use of the internet in the classroom isn’t a mark of the birth of chatgpp. In the year 2001, universities nationwide were scrambling to decipher their own research philosophies and understandings of honest academic work and expand policy boundaries to match pace with technological innovation. Now, the stakes are a little more complex, as schools figure out how to treat bot-produced work rather than weird attributional logistics. The world of higher education is trying to catch up as other professions do the same. The only difference now is that the internet can think for itself.
Daily believes that eventually professors and students are going to need to understand that digital tools that generate text, rather than just collect facts, are going to need to fall under the umbrella of things that can be plagiarized from.
In December, two computational biologists asked an assistant who was not a scientist to assist them with three of their research papers. Their assiduous aide suggested revisions to sections of documents in seconds; each manuscript took about five minutes to review. In one biology manuscript, their helper even spotted a mistake in a reference to an equation. The trial didn’t always run smoothly, but the final manuscripts were easier to read — and the fees were modest, at less than US$0.50 per document.
This assistant, as Greene and Pividori reported in a preprint1 on 23 January, is not a person but an artificial-intelligence (AI) algorithm called GPT-3, first released in 2020. It is one of the much-hyped generative AI chatbot-style tools that can churn out convincingly fluent text, whether asked to produce prose, poetry, computer code or — as in the scientists’ case — to edit research papers (see ‘How an AI chatbot edits a manuscript’ at the end of this article).
LLMs form part of search engines, code-writing assistants and even a chatbot that negotiates with other companies’ chatbots to get better prices on products. A new $20 per month subscription option for Openai promises faster response times and priority access to new features, even though its trial version remains free. Microsoft invested around $10 billion in Openai, and they announced a further investment in January. General Word and data-processing software will soon include LLMs. Today’s tools represent the technology in its infancy, so Generative Artificial intelligence’s future ubiquity seems assured.
Tom Tumiel, a research engineer at InstaDeep, a London-based software consultancy firm, says he uses LLMs every day as assistants to help write code. “It’s almost like a better Stack Overflow,” he says, referring to the popular community website where coders answer each others’ queries.
The result is that LLMs can make errors and misleading information for technical topics that they have little data to train on. They don’t have the ability to show the origins of their information and they also can’t make up quotes for an academic paper. “The tool cannot be trusted to get facts right or produce reliable references,” noted a January editorial on ChatGPT in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence3.
But researchers emphasize that LLMs are fundamentally unreliable at answering questions, sometimes generating false responses. Osmanovich Thunstrm warns that we should be cautious when we use the systems to produce knowledge.
But the tools can be deceptive to naive users. Stack Overflow temporarily banned use of chatgpft in December because they were flooded with incorrect but persuasive answers from enthusiastic users. This could be a nightmare for search engines.
Some search-engine tools, such as the researcher-focused Elicit, can be used to get around plagiarism issues by using their capabilities to guide queries for relevant literature, and then to summarize each website or document found by the engines so Producing an output of apparently referenced content.
For now, ChatGPT is not trained on sufficiently specialized content to be helpful in technical topics, some scientists say. Kareem Carr, a biostatistics PhD student at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was underwhelmed when he trialled it for work. He thinks that it would be hard for them to get the level of specificity he needs. (Even so, Carr says that when he asked ChatGPT for 20 ways to solve a research query, it spat back gibberish and one useful idea — a statistical term he hadn’t heard of that pointed him to a new area of academic literature.)
The BLOOM LLM: Defending the Use of Artificial Intelligence to Combat Spam, Hate Speech, Spam and Other Harbingering Outputs
Galactica had hit a familiar safety concern that ethicists have been pointing out for years: without output controls LLMs can easily be used to generate hate speech and spam, as well as racist, sexist and other harmful associations that might be implicit in their training data.
OpenAI’s guardrails have not been very successful. In December last year, computational neuroscientist Steven Piantadosi at the University of California, Berkeley, tweeted that he’d asked ChatGPT to develop a Python program for whether a person should be tortured on the basis of their country of origin. The chatbot replied with code inviting the user to enter a country; and to print “This person should be tortured” if that country was North Korea, Syria, Iran or Sudan. That kind of question was closed off by OpenAI.
Last year, a group of academics released an alternative LLM, called BLOOM. The researchers tried to reduce harmful outputs by training it on a smaller selection of higher-quality, multilingual text sources. The team made its training data open. Researchers have urged big tech firms to responsibly follow this example — but it’s unclear whether they’ll comply.
A further confusion is the legal status of some LLMs, which were trained on content scraped from the Internet with sometimes less-than-clear permissions. Copyright and licensing laws do not apply to the style of the software, though direct copies are covered. This is when imitations are trained by ingesting the originals. Stable Diffusion and Midjourney, the creators of a series of artificial intelligence art programs, are currently being sued by artists and photo agencies for plagiarizing their work, along with OpenAI and Microsoft who are also being sued for software piracy over the creation of their assistant Copilot. The uproar might force a change in law, says a specialist in Internet law.
Some researchers believe setting boundaries for these tools is crucial. Edwards suggests that existing laws on discrimination and bias (as well as planned regulation of dangerous uses of AI) will help to keep the use of LLMs honest, transparent and fair. “There’s loads of law out there,” she says, “and it’s just a matter of applying it or tweaking it very slightly.”
A separate idea is that AI content would come with its own watermark. He and OpenAI were working on a method of watermarking output. It has not yet been released, but a 24 January preprint6 from a team led by computer scientist Tom Goldstein at the University of Maryland in College Park, suggested one way of making a watermark. The idea is to use random-number generators at certain times in the course of generating the LLM’s output to create lists of alternative words that the LLM is instructed to choose from. There is a trace of words that can be identified statistically, but are not obvious to a reader. Editing could defeat this trace, but Goldstein suggests that edits would have to change more than half the words.
There are many products that aim to detect artificial intelligence-written content. In January Openai released a second detection tool for GPT-2. For scientists’ purposes, a tool that is being developed by the firm Turnitin, a developer of anti-plagiarism software, might be particularly important, because Turnitin’s products are already used by schools, universities and scholarly publishers worldwide. The company says it’s been working on AI-detection software since GPT-3 was released in 2020, and expects to launch it in the first half of this year.
An advantage of watermarking is that it rarely produces false positives, Aaronson points out. The text may have been made with Artificial Intelligence if the watermark is present. Still, it won’t be infallible, he says. “There are certainly ways to defeat just about any watermarking scheme if you are determined enough.” Detection tools and watermarking make it harder to be dishonest with artificial intelligence.
Artificial Intelligence Cannot Detect Human Text: A Mysterious Detector Isn’t for Humans, Just For Machines
In the future, Eric Topol hopes that artificial intelligence will cross-check literature against images of bodies in order to assist with diagnoses of cancer and the understanding of the disease. But this requires oversight from specialists, he emphasizes.
With generative AI tools now publicly accessible, you’ll likely encounter more synthetic content while surfing the web. Some instances are benign, like an auto-generated quiz about which dessert matches your political beliefs. (Are you Democratic beignet or a Republican zeppole?) Other instances could be more sinister, like a sophisticated propaganda campaign from a foreign government.
Algorithms with the ability to mimic the patterns of natural writing have been around for a few more years than you might realize. In 2019, Harvard and the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab released an experimental tool that scans text and highlights words based on their level of randomness.
Why would it be helpful? An AI text generator is fundamentally a mystical pattern machine: superb at mimicry, weak at throwing curve balls. Sure, when you type an email to your boss or send a group text to some friends, your tone and cadence may feel predictable, but there’s an underlying capricious quality to our human style of communication.
Did you know that a news article could have been written by artificial intelligence? “These AI generative texts, they can never do the job of a journalist like you Reece,” says Tian. It’s a kind-hearted sentiment. The articles were written by a computer but dragged across the finish line by a human. It occasionally hallucinates, and for the time being, it doesn’t have a chutzpah, which could be an issue for reliable reporting. Everyone knows qualified journalists save the psychedelics for after-hours.
While these detection tools are helpful for now, Tom Goldstein, a computer science professor at the University of Maryland, sees a future where they become less effective, as natural language processing grows more sophisticated. There are systematic differences between human text and machine text that are used in these kinds of detectors. “But the goal of these companies is to make machine text that is as close as possible to human text.” Does this mean all hope of synthetic media detection is lost? Absolutely not.
