The army is celebrating its 250th year and Trump is celebrating his 81st

“We respect, and will defend, the right to peacefully protest, but we will not tolerate violence or lawlessness in our state,” Kehoe said in a statement earlier this week. “While other states may wait for chaos to ensue, the State of Missouri is taking a proactive approach in the event that assistance is needed to support local law enforcement in protecting our citizens and communities.”

In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott ordered National Guard troops to San Antonio and Austin ahead of expected protests. The governor of Missouri activated the National Guard as a precautionary measure.

Marines are expected to protect federal buildings, such as the Wilshire Federal Building, and those inside, they will be equipped with shields and batons, among other crowd control gear, but will not have arresting powers.

The events come in the wake of the President activating the California National Guard against Governor Newsom’s and LA Mayor Bass’s wishes, as well as sending Marines to Los Angeles. The first group of 700 Marines arrived on Friday.

The country has not had a major military parade like this in a long time since presidents like John F. Kennedy and Eisenhower took office.

Protests have generally been peaceful, but some protesters have clashed with law enforcement, set cars ablaze, and vandalized buildings with graffiti. Police have arrested dozens of people across the country.

Demonstrations across the country flared up this week, including in Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. Protests in Los Angeles have been ongoing all week in response to the administration ramping up immigration enforcement in the city.

Plans for commemorating the milestone anniversary have been in place for at least a year – long before Trump had secured a second term. But the parade feature was added in recent months, ballooning the budget by tens of millions for the already large-scale event and leaving planners for both the city and military scrambling to prepare.

The parade is part of a larger slate of events, all taking place around the National Mall. A public festival and live music will precede the parade at 6:30 p.m.

Trump saw a military event in France for Bastille Day and has been requesting a parade ever since. Officials were able to keep the notion at bay because of the questionable image of a peacetime demonstration.

Ahead of the weekend events, organizations across the country planned to protest against the parade, which has been criticized as a vanity project for the White House.

The use of the military to communicate Donald Trump’s power is just another shameful act of this administration.

More than 6,000 uniformed troops will attend the parade, which will feature dozens of armored tanks and other military vehicles. It’s meant to show what happened during the American military conflict, with some uniforms and vehicles being used.

The weekend festivities are expected to cost between $25 million and $45 million, according to the Army. Repairs are planned for damaged city streets due to tanks rolling on them.

Peirce Economakis was bartending on Tuesday evening in Shaw — a residential neighborhood in the city – when he said the main road nearby was suddenly closed off by police around 8 p.m. as truck after truck loaded with military machinery such as tanks and armored cars drove through. The scene probably lasted about 30 minutes, according to him.

“It’s surreal. He said that it was a little depressing. I think many people forget that people actually live here, and it’s not a playground.

Reagan National Airport has said that it will close for several hours on Saturday in order to accommodate a military flyover, potentially disrupting flights on Saturday.

The city has put steel plates along the parade route to protect it from possible damage. D.C. Mayor Mariel Bowser has expressed concern that heavy machinery and tanks could rip up roads and require millions of dollars to repair.

The last major military parade was in 1991, also in D.C., to celebrate the end of the Gulf War and commemorate fallen soldiers from that conflict. Joshua Zeitz is a historian and contributing editor forPOLITIC magazine.

“He’s creating a presidency that doesn’t match what it has traditionally done in American history and the military parade is part of that,” he says.

“In democracies, military parades are meant to commemorate, whereas in authoritarian regimes they’re meant to intimidate and so you can think of, you know, the Soviet Union or more recently in China or North Korea,” Frakes says.

“On June 14 – Flag Day – President Trump wants tanks in the street and a made-for-TV display of dominance for his birthday,” No Kings said in a statement on their website. “A spectacle meant to look like strength. Real power isn’t staged in Washington. Everywhere else, it rises up.

The group said that they wouldn’t show up in Washington on Saturday because they wanted to pull attention away from the display of military grandeur and instead hold their largest demonstration in Philadelphia.

“Instead of allowing this birthday parade to be the center of gravity, we will make action everywhere else the story of America that day: people coming together in communities across the country to reject strongman politics and corruption,” the group said.

As of Friday afternoon, the National Parks Service had approved a protest permit for just one demonstration related to the parade, but other unsanctioned protests could pop up.

The White House: Donald Trump’s plan to use the military to protest against ICE and the death of the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations

Trump’s decision to use the military to Los Angeles during protests against ICE has already sparked a lot of backlash. He has vowed to take action against demonstrators at Saturday’s events.

He told reporters from the Oval Office those who want to protest will be met with force. “And I haven’t even heard about a protest, but you know, this is people that hate our country, but they will be met with very heavy force.”
