The Federal Aviation Administration said in April of 2024 that it was looking into claims made by a Boeing engineer that some of the part of the plane that was broken during the crash in India could have been improperly fastened together.

The airplane manufacturer has faced other prominent safety issues. In January 2024, passengers on an Alaska Airlines flight were exposed to winds due to a hole blowing open on a Boeing plane. Boeing told regulators in August of that year that it would redesign the panels.

In a message to employees, Kelly Ortberg, the company’s chief executive, said that they would be going through a “turnaround year”.

Footage posted by the outlet Press Trust of India showed the plane sinking over a residential quarter and then the sound of a blast, and a ball of fire. Medics rushing casualties on stretchers were shared by The Press Trust. The plane crashed just five minutes after taking off, according to Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the director general of the directorate of civil aviation, who spoke to The Associated Press.

A Boeing spokesman told The Associated Press that it was aware of the reports of the crash and was “working to gather more information.” The 787 was introduced in 2009 and more than 1,000 are operating globally, according to Boeing.

The New York Times reported in April 2024 that the Federal Aviation Administration was investigating claims made by a whistleblower – a Boeing engineer – who claimed that sections of the 787 Dreamliner were improperly fastened together and could break apart after thousands of trips. Boeing told the Times that they had determined that this is not an immediate safety issue.
