Venezuela’s temporary protected status is at risk in Florida

Noem Ends the TPS Extension of the Biden-Conventional Venezuelan Presidential Exit. Activists Critique the Trump Administration

In its court filings, the Trump administration says TPS is no longer needed for Venezuelans because economic and political conditions have improved there. Ferro says that’s simply not true. She says that the US State Department issued a travel advisory last week. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s department asked US citizens who are in Venezuela to leave immediately, because of a travel warning that was published.

Noem ended the 18-month extension granted by the Biden administration. The suit was filed on behalf of the people affected by the move.

Over 8 million people have left Venezuela in the last three years because of political persecution, violence and a lack of essential services. The election that resulted in Nicols Maduro’s reelection was fraudulent by the opposition. More than 2000 people were arrested, including more than 100 minor, after protests broke out.

A Supreme Court Decision Approving to the Trump Administration to End Protected Status for the Venezuelan People in the United States, Leaving behind the Maduro Rule

The Supreme Court ruling applies to the group of immigrants. Those who got the protected status in 2021 are expected to lose it later this year when the Trump administration said it plans to let the current program expire.

The Supreme Court on Monday allowed, for now, the Trump administration to remove legal protections for roughly 350,000 Venezuelans now living in the U.S., under a program that had protected them from deportation known as Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

The Secretary of Homeland Security has power to grant temporary Protected Status to people from certain countries if there’s a reason to believe that the nationals will not be able to return safely.

Emergency orders are common in the high court, but the court’s brief did not explain its reasons. The application would have been denied by the Justice, according to the court.

The court’s decision allows the Trump administration to end TPS for this group pending appeal of the case, paving the way for possible deportations soon. The Trump administration made an emergency application to the United States Supreme Court after a federal judge paused the administration’s plans before they could end.

The Trump administration ended temporary protected status for about 350,000 people from Venezuela in January. An appeals court agreed with the decision to put the order on hold while the judge heard the case.

In Florida, the largest group of Venezuela’s in the US has grown in the past decades as they fled the rule of authoritarian presidents.

Cecilia Gonzalez and her family fled Venezuela a few years ago because of the political persecution they faced under leader Nicols Maduro. “Both of my parents were very vocal against the Maduro regime. My father was an attorney. My mom is a political science specialist.
