Portugal’s Electricity Outage: Reports on a Loss of Public Transportation, Traffic Lights, Courts, ATMs, and Airports
Reports said several Lisbon subway cars were evacuated. Courts stopped work and ATMs were not working in Portugal. Traffic lights in Lisbon stopped working.
In Portugal, a country of some 10.6 million people, the outage hit the capital, Lisbon, and surrounding areas, as well as northern and southern parts of the country.
The graph on the Spain’s electricity network website showed demand across the country dropping from 28,500MW to close to 15,000 usd in about an hour.
In a few hours, the electricity network operator in Spain said that it was restoring power in the north and south of the peninsula, which would help restore the electricity supply nationwide.
It seems the problem was with the distribution network in Spain. It’s still being ascertained,” Cabinet Minister Leitão Amaro was quoted as saying.
Sky News reports that play has been stopped at the Madrid Open. According to a report, Madrid’s underground train system has been evacuated and the city’s traffic lights are not working. Air traffic in Spain and Portugal is also reportedly affected by outages at area airports, with Spanish airport operator Aena saying on X that backup generators are currently active at impacted airports. Emergency services in Madrid are operating on backup generators.
