Customer patience is tested with startup video ads

Do you need a video game? A user test to see if you can autoplay video ads before you can view the home screen of the OS

Reports of Roku customers seeing video ads automatically play before they could view the OS’ home screen started appearing online this week. A user posted yesterday that he got an ad for a movie before he actually got to his regular home screen. Several people said they saw an ad for the movie Moana 2. The ads have a close option, but some users appear to have not seen it.

Whether it’s Amazon, Google, or Roku, they’re all constantly trying to feel out just how much customers are willing to tolerate in exchange for affordable streaming gadgets. These ads can be found on pricier hardware as well. A couple weeks ago, I saw a Starbucks ad on my Hisense U8N which retails for over $900. Not ideal, but this is how it goes now.

It’s up to you, either ignore the ads and go about your day, switch to a product like the Apple TV 4K, or use third-party tools to avoid the advertising machine. The company might be doing ways to foil solutions like Pi-hole.

A user on Roku’s community forum wrote, “I hope this was a fluke. I destroyed my Amazon boxes because of this garbage. If it keeps going, I will own my Rokus next.

Roku didn’t discuss whether it planned to make autoplaying ads permanent on the OS, which devices were affected, or why it used the ads in the first place.

Our recent test was just the latest example of how we explore new ways to showcase brands and programming while still maintaining high quality.
