Volodymyr Zelensky: I’m not gonna give up, but I’ll tell you what I can do for the United States
Zelensky would have opened the way for more consequential negotiations with the US on military backing, and on the terms of a possible cease-fire, if he had been able to wrap up his deal with the Trump administration.
“I’m not aligned with anybody. “For the good of the world, I am aligned with the United States of America, and I want to get this thing over with,” Trump said.
The argument came at the end of a lengthy question-and-answer session with reporters, after Trump defended his approach with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying he was trying to broker a deal between two parties.
A potential deal between the United States and Ukraine intended to pave the way for an end to the war with Russia was up in the air Friday, after a meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office on Friday grew contentious.
Trump said the Ukrainian leader had been disrespectful and telling him, “you’re gambling with World War III.” He told Zelenskyy that he was not acting thankful for the support of the United States.
Zelenskyy was accused of running propaganda tours and campaigning for the Democrats in Pennsylvania in order to ruin the party’s chances in this month’s election.

The two countries will need to negotiate a plan to set up the fund in a second phase. The second agreement would need the approval of the Parliament of Ukraine. Mr Zelensky said that this was important to him. “Between the first step and the second step, we need to understand where we stand with the United States.”
The draft vaguely referenced security guarantees, but did not signal any specific U.S. commitment to safeguarding Ukraine’s security — a provision Kyiv has vigorously pressed to include as the war with Russia enters its fourth year.
During his first cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Mr. Trump said he wouldn’t give security assurances beyond very much. “We’re going to have Europe do that.”
