Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy is being used again
The 2024-2020 Cuts and Keeps: An Apparent Appeal to the U.S. Senate Homeland Security Committee on the CBP One App
Several orders aim to increase border security and discourage migration to the United States. Since the early days of his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump has vowed to sign executive actions to impose severe limits on immigration to kick off his second term. During his campaign, Trump made it a point to bring back this policy.
The Biden administration eventually filed an appeal up to the U.S. Supreme Court where they found some success. The Supreme Court ruled in 2022 on a 5-4 decision that Biden did have the authority to end the policy.
The app stated on Monday that the functions of the app were no longer available in January of 2025, and that existing appointments had been canceled.
The app prioritised newcomers over those who have lived in the U.S. for a long time, according to critics. Republicans also argued the app created what was essentially a “catch and release” system, in which migrants are allowed into the U.S. while awaiting immigration proceedings. The app’s vetting systems weren’t strong enough to prevent fraud, they claimed. There is no proof that there is widespread fraud.
The Biden administration rolled out the CBP One app in January 2023. The administration said at the time that it wanted to cut wait times and crowds at ports of entry in order to provide safe, orderly and humane processing. The Department of Homeland Security says the app has provided 900,000 people with appointment to show up at ports of entry to be screened and petition for asylum.
The policy of having some asylum seekers wait in Mexico for their hearings at the southern border is expected to be reintroduced by President Trump.
“No matter what obstacles and dangers are thrown in our path, I will keep on fighting for you and for this country that we all love,” Trump said in a September rally in Wisconsin, listing off several of his other proposals including reinstituting remain in Mexico.
The policy received renewed attention in Washington even before Trump was sworn into office. The Senate Homeland Security Committee’s first hearing of the year was focused on remain in Mexico.
Democrats criticized the policy as a driver of criminal activity. The Republicans said the program stopped migration levels from going up.
“These policies can’t solve border problems, they can’t address the immigration court system, and they can’t improve our needs at the border,” the NAACP said before the hearing last week.
Cancellation of the CBP One Application for Immigrants in Mexico After Donald Trump Assymptotic Rulers Turned Down
The Customs and Border Protection says the app is no longer in use.
“Effective January 20, 2025, the functionalities of CBP One that previously allowed undocumented aliens to submit advance information and schedule appointments at eight southwest border ports of entry is no longer available, and existing appointments have been cancelled,” a notice on the website updated on Monday reads.
Margelis Tinoco knelt on the ground after Donald Trump took the oath of office at the international bridge that crosses between Juarez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas.
Almost as soon as Donald Trump became President Trump, the phone application that allows migrants appointments to seek asylum in the United States went down.
A few dozen migrants have already been given appointments. Some of them had waited almost a year in Mexico, applying every day for the chance to cross the border legally. Their dream of moving to the U.S. was undone in just a few minutes.
