The suspect in the killing of the United healthcare CEO is a man named Luigi Mangione

Some companies removed their biographical information and photos from their websites because of the praise heaped in for violent vigilantism.

Police apprehended Luigi Mangione, 26, in Altoona five days after Thompson was shot in Midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Wednesday, December 4, setting off a manhunt for the shooter, whose identity remained unknown. Mangione was taken into custody after other diners at a Mcdonald’s in Altoona saw his resemblance to images of the suspected shooter released by the New York Police Department.

Many who had spent days speculating about the motive of Mangione may have been surprised by the fact he left a digital trail about his life and personality.

During the press conference featuring the NYPD police chief and embattled Mayor Eric Adams, police said an employee at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, recognized Mangione from photos made public by police and called local authorities.

Thompson was shot dead in Manhattan on Wednesday in what New York police called a “brazen, targeted murder.” Corporal August Stickel of the Altoona Police Department said Mangione was arrested this morning at the fast food restaurant on “unrelated charges.”

The shooting’s apparent anti-insurance motivation has led to expressions of support across the political spectrum for the assailant. There are multiple online profiles that appear to be linked to Mangione, including a Goodreads account where he left a favorable review of Industrial Society and Its Future, the manifesto written by Ted Kaczynski.

The author of the book Industrial Society and Its Future, Luigi Mangione, wrote a review which said that it was easy to quickly and thoughtless write off the anti-technology essay written by the Unabomber. But it’s simply impossible to ignore how prescient many of his predictions about modern society turned out.”

The shooting prompted a national uproar about the role for-profit companies, like Thompson’s, play in the US health system. But Mangione, who appears to come from a wealthy and privileged background, would be less likely than many Americans to be at the economic mercy of that system.

Images of the suspected shooter, wearing a mask and smiling in video footage, are being shared on social media as the face of a modern-day folk hero who took action against a system perceived to be rife with corruption.

Police were led to Mangione through old-school detective work and new age technology. We deployed drones, K9 units, and scuba divers. We leveraged the domain awareness system, argos cameras, and conducted aviation canvases.”

On the “Unabomber” Brian Thompson, the New York City Shooting and the “Peculiarity of Profits Above Care”

The NYPD investigators discovered the words “delay,” “depose,” and “deny” at the site of Thompson’s shooting. According to the Times, authorities say Mangione was carrying a “manifesto” that included passages “criticizing health care companies for putting profits above care.”

He had an Ivy League-educated tech worker who was interested in philosophy, health and self-help advice from many different types of experts, including Andrew Huberman.

He received his masters degree in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020. The Daily Pennsylvanian reported that Mangione started a game development club at Penn that grew to include over 50 members.

Mangione most recently worked as a data engineer at TrueCar, according to his LinkedIn page. A spokesperson for the company said via email that Mangione “has not been an employee of our company since 2023.”

A positive review was left for the writings of Theodore Kaczynski, also known as the “Unabomber,” who wrote books about assassinations of people, including a president of United Airlines.

Authorities arrested a man in Pennsylvania on Monday who police say is connected to the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City last week.

UnitedHealthcare didn’t reply to the request for comment. In a statement given to other media outlets, the company was hopeful that the apprehension brought relief to theBrian’s family, friends, colleagues and others affected by the tragedy. We appreciate and will continue to work with the law enforcement. We want everyone to respect the privacy of the family as they mourn.
