Ex-officers in Memphis have been found guilty of causing the death of a man

The trial of Tyre Nichols, the former Memphis police officer charged with murder by the state, in connection with his fatal beating on a traffic stop

Jurors deliberated nearly six hours before returning the verdicts. At a later date, the ex- policemen will be sentenced. They are charged with murder by the state.

The case was built around graphic images of Black and other police officers beating Nichols while using pepper spray and batons during a traffic stop. It also showed officers seemingly bragging about the beating as Nichols gasps for his life on the pavement.

“It just corroborates everything we’ve been saying for a long time. The people who died. Burress said that they do not want to become complacent and forget about the journey that they are on. “It’s just going to take a while before we can finally see if there’s going to be a change in Memphis.“

Paula Buress was outside of the court holding a cardboard sign with the name of Tyre Nichols on it. She says that local activists have been trying for a long time to get attention to the police tactics in Memphis.

Fired Memphis police detectives Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith were all convicted of obstruction of justice and witness tampering. They were found not guilty of violating his civil rights, the most severe charge they faced. Haley was found guilty of depriving Nichols of his civil rights and deliberate indifference resulting in serious bodily injury.

Officers were trying “to arrest someone who was doing everything but complying,” Bean’s attorney, John Keith Perry said during closing arguments. “When a person runs from you they’re trying to escape custody,” he said. “It was not unreasonable force.”

The trial began in September and defense lawyers said that the stop was a high-risk one, and that officers acted within policy when they pursued him. They said the officers used more force after Nichols ran from them.

Three former Memphis police officers received a mixed verdict in the high-profile police brutality case related to Tyre Nichols’ fatal beating. They were acquitted of deprivation of his civil Rights, which resulted in his death. They faced the most severe charge they could have faced, and a guilty verdict could have resulted in life in prison. They were found guilty of obstruction of justice and witness tampering. Haley was also found guilty of causing serious bodily injury to Nichols.

She urged jurors to trust their eyes. “You saw the punches. You saw the kicks. Gilbert said you saw the baton strike. She also emphasized how Nichols had his hands in front of his face to protect himself as he called out for his mother — who lived just a block away.

When they thought no one would watch, officers didn’t expect to catch what happened on video, according to the federal prosecutor.

Members of the family are happy with the convictions and hope that it sends a message to police officers that they can be held accountable for their actions.
