The CBS News Channel Broadcast Debate on Tech Issues: J.D. Vance and Tim Walz, Former School Teacher and Former Transportation Expert, Lina Khan, and the Economy
Unlike the last ABC debate between former president Donald Trump and vice president Kamala Harris, the microphones will remain on for the duration of the debate. The candidates will be given two minutes to answer questions, 2 minutes to reply to their opponents, and 1 minute for rebuttals.
On Tuesday night, vice presidential nominees J.D. Vance and Tim Walz will debate one another for the first and only time ahead of the November presidential election.
The former school teacher and the Hillbilly Elegy author have each taken some significant stances on tech. Walz, for example, navigated a power struggle between ridehailing apps and their drivers, vetoing a state bill to raise minimum pay for Uber and Lyft drivers after the companies threatened to leave the state, then signing a different bill to raise driver pay an estimated 20 percent without losing what he saw as a key mode of transportation for many Minnesotans.
He ruffled feathers with his stance on tech competition regulation. The former venture capitalist and Peter Thiel protégé has praised Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan as “one of the few people in the Biden administration that I actually think is doing a pretty good job,” even though her progressive enforcement and rulemaking on tech is often the subject of critical Wall Street Journal op-eds and corporate pushback.
We will be listening in on how the debate will affect tech, as it is expected to focus more on the key issues in this election including immigration policy, reproductive healthcare, and the economy.
The debate will be hosted by CBS and will be seen on the network’s broadcast and streaming channels. This one will be broadcast and shown on other major broadcasters and news channels.
Norah O’Donnell, anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News, and Margaret Brennan, moderator for Face the Nation and chief foreign affairs correspondent for CBS, will moderate the debate.
The candidates will get two minutes to answer each question and two minutes to provide responses, with one minute for rebuttals. Moderators can choose to grant an additional minute to continue a topic. The candidates won’t have a heads-up on questions and aren’t allowed to bring prewritten notes.

CBS will not have the anchors jump into fact-checking in real time, but will instead give viewers a code on the screen that will lead them to a live fact-checking page.
When he is a farmer he would prefer to hear both candidates talk about immigration, trade, tariffs, and the farm bill, rather than his personal attacks.
“I predict Vance will spend ninety minutes affirming that the legacy core GOP principles of diplomacy, statesmanship, personal responsibility, and compassion have all but been extinguished from a once-serious party,” Gibbs said.
He has become a familiar political figure in Ohio in less than two years in the Senate. But only one Democrat in the country has had the experience of debating Vance on stage.
The former congressman from the area defeated his opponent after being endorsed by Trump in the Republican primary.
Someone is going to try to frame the Harris- Walz ticket as extreme and out of touch. They’ll be blamed for everything and the world’s going to end if they get elected,” Ryan said about Vance on the debate stage. Donald Trump has an audience of one, so he’ll be hitting that hard.
Ryan said some of Vance’s other controversial statements also seem likely to surface, such as the false and racist rumors he’s repeated about legal Haitian immigrants in Springfield and his negative comments about childless women.
“I don’t know if it’s who he really is or who he thinks he really is at this point,” Ryan said. “There’s a real uncomfortableness to him, and he’s also very thin-skinned and so he can fly off the handle a little bit if you hit him in the right spot.”
During the debate, Ryan stated that Walz should be prepared to fact-check him in real time. CBS News, which is hosting the debate, said it will be up to the candidates to call out inaccurate statements rather than relying on its moderators.
It’s not unusual for a vice-presidential running mate to show up, but with his popularity low, another one showed up Tuesday night. While campaigning for president, a reporter at CBS was booed when he asked him a question, but that is a far cry from the booing that takes place at his rallies when the reporter asks a question.
Weaver, a consultant who has worked with a range of Republicans, including former President Ronald Reagan, said that Republicans were “energized” and that they were impressed by his policy expertise and willingness to deftly answer all press questions while campaigning.”
Over the last few years, Weaver says Vance has improved his communications skills. Weaver said no matter what happens in November, Vance will either be the Vice President and President of the Senate or a first term Senator.

“If I had been vice president, I’d have said to the states that we ought to have multiple slates of electors, and I think the U.S. Congress should have fought over it from there,” he said. That is the right way to deal with an elections that a lot of folks, including me, think had a lot of problems. That is what we should have done.

To be clear, there is nothing in the Constitution that empowers a vice president to force states to have multiple slates of electors. According to legal experts, it is up to states to decide that. There wasn’t reason for multiple slates of electors to be considered in the 2020 election.

Neither candidate was asked about Ukraine, where these two campaigns have fundamentally different views, and Vance, in particular, has been a vocal critic of U.S. aid for Ukraine.
Walz didn’t have to account for his military record timeline or his misstatements on carrying weapons of war. The man who made the allegations about the service of the other was not asked about it.
This debate likely will not move the needle at all in this presidential campaign, because — first and foremost — no one votes for the vice-presidential pick. The most important rule of being a running mate is, first, do no harm.
That exposes one of the biggest issues in America: People don’t agree on a shared set of facts. People have their own ideologies and are finding others who affirm what they believe — whether Trump or posts on social media — rather than having their minds changed by contrary evidence.
In a way, Trump has replaced traditional sources of knowledge with an idea that people will not accept: tariffs will pay for child care. Vance embraces this line of thinking and says voters should trust Trump over others. Donald Trump had the courage to say to that bipartisan consensus, “We’re not doing it anymore”, in the same way that conventional wisdom says about the global economy. “
The right more generally has moved away from believing experts in American politics. Democrats have had their own issues with being perceived as elitist and talking down to working-class voters. Republicans, like Trump, have exploited that.

The best moments of the night were when he talked about the 2020 presidential election. At one point, Walz asked if Trump had lost the election. Vance deflected and claimed instead that the real threat to democracy was “censorship.”
Instead of directly saying he misspoke, Walz gave a meandering answer that included him saying, “I will talk a lot,” which could imply you can’t believe everything he says.
His response to questions regarding his time in China was weak. Walz has said he was in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests, which took place in the spring of 1989. Minnesota Public Radio and others have reported that he didn’t actually travel there until later in the summer.
On style, Vance was clearly more polished than Walz, and he likely accomplished what he sought out to do — appear more rational and agreeable than Trump and, frankly, himself. But there’s a real question about who the real Vance is. He became a cheerleader for Trump after being a critic. He got a reputation as a hard-charging MAGA partisan willing to take on any comer, even if it meant making controversial statements, like “childless cat ladies” or spreading false claims about immigrants eating.
The vice-presidential debate Tuesday night will feature arguments about who did well at certain times and not as well as others, and there will be some on both sides.
