The Secret Service is facing criticism after it had 2 close calls

Does the Secret Service Care about the July Assassination? The Case of the Butler, Florida, Shooting at a White Man’s Eye

The Secret Service has come under scrutiny since July, when a gunman fired multiple shots at Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, at the Butler rally, striking Trump’s ear, killing one attendee and wounding two others. The gunman was killed. The second man was able to shoot at Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course two months later. He did not aim at the former president, but rather at someone else. The suspect was caught.

The Secret Service thinks they have a manpower shortage. And look, it’s about allocation of resources,” he said. It’s not certain, but Congress will be willing to do what’s necessary.

Speaking in a conversation with the America First Policy Institute, House Speaker Mike Johnson said that the House task force would look into the Sunday incident as well.

Following the July assassination attempt, the U.S. House established a task force to investigate the shooting, while the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee launched an investigation.

Rowe met with some members of Congress last week and asked for better training and the ability to hire more staff. It was not immediately clear how much additional money the agency wanted.

A budget of $3 billion is the amount of the Secret Service. It employs over 2000 additional personnel, 3,600 special agents and 1,600 uniformed division officers.

At a news conference on Monday, Rowe defended his agency and said that following the Pennsylvania shooting, he ordered a paradigm shift of being more proactive instead of reactive. But, he said, the organization needs help.

The Department of Homeland security’s Office of Inspector General decided to look into the process used by the Secret Service for securing the Trump rally.

Lawmakers slammed Cheatle for the Secret Service’s response to that shooting, including failures to communicate with local law enforcement officials before and during Trump’s rally in Butler and its lack of a good plan to secure the roof that ultimately gave the gunman a clear line of sight to shoot at Trump.

Ronald Rowe took over as acting director of the Secret Service after the previous director resigned in the wake of the attempt on Trump’s life.

The agency aims for a “zero-fail” mission. The recent attempts against Trump have led to questions about the leadership of the agency.

Following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S., the agency shifted from the Treasury Department to the Department of Homeland Security, which was created in response to the attacks.

The agency was at the forefront of a number of events in American politics, including the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and attempts on the lives of Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan.

The agency was founded in 1865 under the Department of the Treasury to help combat counterfeiting of U.S. currency following the Civil War. On the day he was assassinated, President Abraham Lincoln signed an approval to start the agency.

The two months after the July 13 shooting, the Secret Service has stepped up to protect the civil liberties of the president and the vice president

In a Monday interview on social media platform X, Trump heaped praise on the agents of the Secret Service, saying they have done a great job in protecting him.

In two months, a second alleged shooter came close to Trump, though he did not shoot the former president. The suspect was captured.

The Secret Service admitted on Friday that their failures led to a man being able to shoot former President Donald Trump at a rally.

“It’s important that we hold ourselves to account for the failures of July 13 and that we use the lessons learned to make sure that we do not have another failure like this again,” Ronald Rowe, the acting director of the Secret Service, told reporters.

According to Row, other agents havency, over reliance on mobile devices and flaws in advance planning. He said employees would be held accountable, declined to give details, but reiterated that contrary to media reports, he did not ask for anyone to resign.

Rowe said that the former president has had more robust security since he left office. That security was increased to a presidential level after the July 13 shooting.

Rowe said that based on information he had about the second incident, it was handled according to his training. The young Secret Service agent took swift action, reporting shots he fired at the attacker, and communicating via radio.

The House approved a bill that would require the Secret Service to give the same protection as the president and vice president.

Rowe said employees would be held accountable, declined to give details, but reiterated that contrary to media reports, he did not ask for anyone to resign.

Communication broke down on a number of levels. On the day of the rally, different radio frequencies made it difficult for the Secret Service agents and law enforcement officials to share information quickly.

A review found multiple law enforcement entities questioned the efficacy of the local team’s positioning, yet there wasn’t a follow-up discussion about changing their position. “There was also no discussion with Secret Service advance personnel about positioning that team atop the AGR roof. Local sniper support were apparently not opposed to that location.”

The agency released the initial findings for its internal review just days after it came under additional scrutiny over the shooting at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Fla.
