The Internet Archive lost an appeal over ebook lending
The New Eleven-Lending System: The Case for Fair Use in the Library Sector of e-Collective Librarianship and Digital Lending
On the one hand, eBook licensing fees may impose a burden on libraries and reduce access to creative work. Authors have the right to be paid for copying and distribution of their work. The Copyright Act is balanced by these malpractice claims. We must uphold that balance here.
The NEL was an offshoot of an ongoing digital lending project called the Open Library, in which the Internet Archive scans physical copies of library books and lets people check out the digital copies as though they’re regular reading material instead of ebooks. The Open Library lent the books to one person at a time—but the NEL removed this ratio rule, instead letting large numbers of people borrow each scanned book at once.
The verdict is not terribly surprising, due to how courts have interpreted fair use recently, said James Grimmelmann, a professor at Cornell University.

Rage against profit driven machine learning
Artificial intelligence (AI) researchers are often paid more than engineers, according to a study. Researchers at MIT, the University of California, Berkeley and Colorado State University were paid an average of $27,250 annually for a bachelor’s degree in AI. They were also paid an average of $51,000 annually for their PhDs. The study found research articles with one or more industry co-authors grew from 22% in 2000.
Corporate lobbying is having an affect on artificial intelligence laws in the US
Artificial intelligence can help scientists tackle some problems such as climate change and drug discovery, a study said. The study analysed papers presented at avariety of AI conferences between 1995 and 2020 and found that composition of a research team was related to the novelty of their work. It added that many companies are making moves toward open access for their models.
Physicists observe quarks for the first time
Monte Carlo simulation of the top quarks’ signals and decays is used to model the (tbart) signal and the expected standard model background processes. In signal modelling uncertainties the effects at the particle level travel to the detector level causing shifts in both levels. Uncertainties in modelling the background processes influence how much background is subtracted from the expected or observed data.
The mystery of Hezbollah’s deadly exploding pagers
Israel’s military on Wednesday carried out a large-scale operation to “destroy” Hezbollah’s terror infrastructure in Lebanon.
