Asus: On The Upcoming Update of the BIOS Instability (Vmin): Performance Mitigation Techniques for the 13th Gen and 14th Gen Desktop Processors

The Z790 motherboards have been the target of a number of bios updates through the forums. These are also typically posted to Asus’ support pages a few days after they’re posted to its ROG forums. The individual support pages for the motherboards ofMSI can contain BIOS updates.

If it works out, this could be a very positive sign for Intel, which lost a lot of its reputation when its flagship chips were found to crash earlier this year, but discovered after a long investigation there wouldn’t be a true fix. Intel recently announced the layoffs of at least 15,000 workers and stopped “non-essential” work.

If you have an Asus board and want to check that your BIOS is set to the right power profile, Falcon Northwest has a good overview we’ve embedded below. The latest update of Asus’s BIOS needs to default to Intel’s settings.

In addition to extended warranty coverage, Intel has released three mitigations related to the instability issue – commonly experienced as consistent application crashes and repeated hangs – to help stabilize customer systems with Intel Core 13th and 14th gen desktop processors:

The latest microcode update will not prevent users from maximizing the power of their unlocked 14th Gen and 13th Gen desktop processors. Users can disable the eTVB setting in their BIOS if they wish to push above the 1.55V threshold. As always, Intel recommends users proceed with caution when overclocking their desktop processors, as overclocking may void their warranty and/or affect system health. As a general best practice, Intel recommends customers with Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors utilize the Intel Default Settings.

Intel is looking into scenarios in which the Vmin could shift on potentially impacted Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors. Intel will provide updates by end of August.

The internal testing by Intel indicates that performance impact is within the run-to-run variation. Performance has been within run-to-run variations for gaming. Cyberpunk 2077, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Total War: Warhammer III – Mirrors of Madness) There is one exception that shows slightly more impact. The system performance is dependent on a number of factors.
