The Supreme Court is the place to appeal the Trump immunity ruling

Lawyers for Trump made the request Monday, writing the justices that they are preparing a petition for certiorari, or a full application for the high court to take the case. They said they want the trial in Washington D.C. to be delayed indefinitely. The issue is whether or not Trump should have immunity from criminal charges for his actions during his time in the White House.
The judges wrote that they cannot accept that the former occupant of the Presidency puts the rule of law above their own. They said that placing the President beyond reach of the three branches would cause the system of separated powers to collapse.
“Former President Trump has become citizen Trump, with all of the defenses of any other criminal defendant,” the ideologically diverse judges wrote in an unsigned, unanimous opinion.
The editorial board recently highlighted the need for the Supreme Court to reach a swift resolution in considering Donald Trump’s extraordinary claim that he has absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for all time and for anything he might do, even after leaving office.

The lawyers for Trump understand that the verdict is important to his chances of being elected. The filing said that the special counsel’s request for speed was politically motivated and would affect President Trump’s ability to campaign.
The whole point of Smith is to make sure a quick trial, something that every person, including a former president, is entitled to. One of the core principles of the American justice system is that justice delayed is justice denied. Smith may respond quickly, even before a week is up, which would give the Supreme Court another chance to do the same.
