Anti-Trump protests across the country: Minnesota shooting of 2 lawmakers has been captured and charged, and an officer abandoned in a protest on Sunday
Trump condemned the shooting in Minnesota in a post on his social media.
And last summer, President Trump, who has often been criticized for stoking the intense emotions that can lead to political violence in the first place, survived an assassination attempt that left his ear bloodied and killed a person in the crowd.
Evans said Sunday that if officers hadn’t encountered Boelter at Hortman’s house, forcing him to abandon his vehicle, “I have every confidence that this would have continued throughout the day.”
“No Kings” flyers were also found, a reference to the anti-Trump protests that happened around the country Saturday. Minnesota state officials told residents not to attend the gatherings, but many still attended and the protests were mostly peaceful.
Other protests across the U.S. also remained largely peaceful, though not without incident: Police in Virginia arrested a man for recklessly driving his car through a crowd gathered to protest, hitting one person. In Texas, another man was arrested for making threats against state lawmakers there.
The Salt Lake City police announced on Sunday that a bystander died after being shot at a protest, and that a member of the event’s peace keeping team was holding a rifle at demonstrators.
The shootings in Minnesota are part of a string of high-profile political violence across the country in recent years. A man allegedly set fire to Penn in April. There are charges against Gov. Josh Shapiro’s home, including attempted murder, terrorism, and accessory after the fact.
The Brennan Center for Justice released a report last year that said over half of the state lawmakers had been threatened or attacked in recent years. There has been a spike in threats against members of Congress at the federal level.

Police went to the Hortman’s home after they responded to the shooting atHoffman’s house. They saw a car with emergency lights and a man in body armor at the door. The man was able to get away after shooting at the police.
Earlier that same morning, Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot at their home in nearby Champlin, Minn. The statement shared with Minnesota Sen. Amy was said to show that John is closer to being out of the woods than previously thought.
According to Bruley, Boelter was thought to have run into the woods after a search near the town of Green Isle. After nearly an hour and a half with the assistance of multiple police units and a helicopter, authorities were able to call him out to them.
Law enforcement in Minnesota have arrested the man wanted in the attack early Saturday morning that killed one state lawmaker and left another wounded.
