For the first time since anti-ICE protests started on Friday, downtown LA was under curfew last night. The city said the protests have mostly been peaceful but that there were incidents of loot and vandalization. The state and the city have objected to the deployment of Marines and more National Guard troops. The National Guard’s mission is to protect federal employees.

President Trump’s immigration crackdown is causing some individuals to leave the country. High-profile raids on farms, construction sites, and restaurants has prompted many workers to go into hiding. According to the Labor Department, over a million foreign-born workers have exited the labor force in the past two months. Consequently, businesses that have traditionally depended on workers without legal authorization are facing significant challenges.

An appeal hearing regarding Donald Trump’s criminal conviction and sentencing for hush money violations against Stormy Daniels in the aftermath of the 2016 election

An appeal hearing regarding Trump’s criminal conviction and sentencing is scheduled for today in a federal court of appeals in Manhattan. This hearing is the latest development in the case involving hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. Last year, Trump was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a payment to Daniels. The judge over the case ruled that because Trump is the president, he won’t face prison time or other penalties, but the conviction will remain on his record.

The Consumer Federation of America says home insurance premiums have risen in recent years due to climate change. Some of the most vulnerable areas, such as coastal communities and regions prone to fires, have now become riskier for insurers and banks. Americans have been pushed into expensive state-run plans with limited coverage because insurers dropped customers in high-risk areas. Losing insurance makes it hard to rebuild or move after disasters. One effective way to reduce insurance costs is for homeowners and communities to invest in protective measures against storms and fires, such as installing fortified roofs and thinning forest vegetation. There are efforts being made to fix America’s insurance markets and you need to know about that.

A continuous glucose monitor is a small, painless device that sticks to your arm and transmits signals to your phone, providing estimates of your blood sugar levels. Research indicates that this technology has been transformative for people with diabetes. In March 2024, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first continuous glucose monitors designed for use by people without diabetes. Currently, two companies, Dexcom and Abbott, are producing these devices. But whether they actually help individuals without diabetes or prediabetes improve their health is the real question.

The U.S. Department of Justice is requesting an extensive amount of election data from Colorado. It’s specifically seeking “all records” related to the 2024 federal elections, according to documents obtained by NPR. Additionally, the DOJ has asked the state to preserve any remaining records from the 2020 election. Several voting experts and officials have informed NPR that this request is highly unusual and concerning, especially in light of President Trump’s false claims regarding elections.

Recent polling across various surveys shows a conflicting message about whether people approve of Trump’s deportation policies. This week, a CBS poll found 54% of people approved of his approach to deportation. But yesterday, a Quinnipiac poll showed 56% disapproved. The numbers indicate unpredictability within the public’s opinion, showing that a percentage of people are open to being swayed, NPR’s Domenico Montanaro tells Up First.

The Republicans’ bill would penalize colleges and universities if their students leave with debt but not enough money to pay it off. The schools would be told to assume some of the financial responsibility for the debt. If it can make it through the Senate, the Congressional Budget Office estimates the proposal could save the government more than $6 billion over the next decade.
