Climate Change in St. George, Utah: How Climate Change Change Can Affect Where and How People Live – Part II: The Top Ten Tony Awards Winners

Like many cities in the American West, St. George, Utah, has a booming population. But climate change is making heat more intense and rain less reliable. Local leaders want to stretch the water supply, so they want to use the sewage supply. Wastewater will be sprayed onto fields to free up water for homes. The county currently uses some of its drinking water for outdoor irrigation. The sewage recycling plan can cost a lot, but it could be worth it to other cities in need. Here’s a look at how it could work.

NPR is dedicating this entire week to stories and conversations about the search for climate solutions for living and building on a hotter planet and how climate change affects decisions on where and how people live.

Cynthia Erivo hosted the Tony Awards last night at Radio City Music Hall. No one show swept the awards this year and that’s good news according to the NPR culture editor. This Broadway season’s shows were tremendously diverse, which resulted in many tight races. The full list of award winners is here.

How Do Federal Judges Evaluate their Judiciary Power? Los Angeles Protests, Drug Overdoses, and ICE Deployments

Protesters in Los Angeles have been demonstrating in the last few days to protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids. The president plans to deploy 2,000 National Guard soldiers. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the deployment was “inflaming tensions” and wasn’t necessary. On Saturday, ICE said in a social media post that it had arrested 118 immigrants during operations in LA last week. You can see photos from the protests here.

Federal judges have a lot of power over the people who work for them, including law clerks, who report a real culture of fear. Over a year, Carrie Johnson of NPR spoke with dozens of current and former clerks of the judiciary about their experiences in the federal judiciary. She found problems with 50 judges in 26 states through her conversations.

Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced yesterday that he is removing all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which is a vital vaccine committee that advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Kennedy has the power to replace anyone on the committee as his department oversees the CDC. Kennedy was first nominated, and some people were worried that he would replace everyone on the committee.

Over 230,000 young people died from drug overdoses over the last ten years, but they are finally declining. In 2021, fentanyl and other drugs led to over 31,000 fatalities in this age group. The data from the CDC shows that the number of fatal overdoses had dropped by more than one-third by last year.

Singing to Babies in Disaster-Induced Floods: A Child’s Playground for Inspiration, Inspiration and Health – An Empirical Study

In late September, Hurricane Helene caused devastating damage across North Carolina, resulting in over 100 deaths and billions of dollars in property losses. Earthaven Ecovillage, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains and home to about 100 full-time residents, remained relatively unscathed compared to other areas like Asheville, N.C. When their hydroelectric system was damaged, the community quickly activated their backup solar power system. Additionally, the residents were prepared with food supplies and had the skills to collaborate effectively during a crisis. Climate disasters are getting worse and the ability to work together is important. See photos of Earthaven Ecovillage and its residents, and read more about how collectivity can be a climate solution.

A new study confirmed that singing to babies can help boost their health and happiness. Morning Edition wanted to further investigate the matter by asking what they sing to their little ones. There were a variety of songs and reasons behind the responses. Some parents play the guitar for a full jam session while others sing their parent’s songs to them. Listen to the parents sing to their kids or read their full transcript here.
