There were four things to know about the immigration raids that took place this weekend

Analyzing the Los Angeles “Radical Left” Protests of Trump’s Enforcement Action in the United States

President Trump activated the troops from the California National Guard to control protests against federal immigration raids which have taken place in and around the city.

In downtown Los Angeles Sunday, two protests converged near the Metropolitan Detention Center, a federal prison where immigrants were held. The demonstrations grew rowdy and tense. Tear gas was deployed, and an “unlawful assembly” was declared by a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter.

Pete Hegseth wrote on X that if violence continued, active duty Marines were on high alert and would also be mobilized.

The Trump administration is sowing chaos so it can have an excuse to escalate the situation, according to a statement from the president’s nominee for lieutenant governor. That is not how any civilized country behaves.

In Minneapolis and Chicago there were protests last week after actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. After promising to conduct mass deportations, Donald Trump increased immigration enforcement in his second term.

The acting director of ICE said in a statement that “rioters attacked federalICE and law enforcement officers on theLA streets” and that crowds “surrounded and attacked a federal building.”

An unknown number of people were arrested in the clashes. One of them was SEIU California president David Huerta. The union said he was injured during his arrest and later released from custody. The accused will be in court on Monday for interfering with federal officers.

President Trump said he would deploy 2,000 National Guard soldiers in response to the protests. Trump accused the instigators and paid troublemakers of organizing a “Radical Left” protest.

Los Angeles, California, protests against immigration raids have turned into a tinderbox: The response of the LA Police Department and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department

The LA Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said they don’t participate in federal immigration enforcement, but are working to maintain public safety.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said on Friday that she was “angered” by immigration enforcement actions that “sow terror” in the community. She said they wouldn’t stand for it.

Bass said in a second statement that “everyone has the right to peacefully protest, but let me be clear: violence and destruction are unacceptable, and those responsible will be held accountable.”

I think it was a riot. I think it was very bad. Donald Trump left New Jersey on Sunday for Camp David, saying that it was a riot. He questioned whether local officials could control the protests and said federal government would make sure there was “law and order”.

“Governors are the Commanders in Chief of their National Guard and the federal government activating them in their own borders without consulting or working with a state’s governor is ineffective and dangerous,” read the statement, which included the names of 22 Democratic governors.

A third day of protests Sunday turned Los Angeles into a “tinderbox,” according to Mayor Karen Bass, as law enforcement clashed with demonstrators over a series of federal immigration raids.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a Saturday post on X that it had arrested 118 immigrants during operations in Los Angeles last week. Protesters have clashed with the police in Los Angeles, Paramount and neighboring Compton since then.

Police deployed tear gas and pepper spray as protesters gathered outside a detention center on Sunday. Some of the immigrants detained by ICE agents were initially held at the facility.

Elsewhere in California, police in San Francisco said 60 people had been arrested Sunday night and at least three officers were injured when police clashed with protesters demonstrating in that city’s downtown in support of the Los Angeles protests against the immigration raids.

The police wrote on X that they were conducting arrests and people were throwing “concrete, bottles and other objects.” By Sunday evening, LAist reported that Los Angeles police had arrested 10 and the California Highway Patrol arrested another 17 people on the 101 Freeway.

The LA Times-Dispatch of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass: The U.S. National Guard is Doomed to Warfare Immigration Enforcement

Anna Benedict told LAist that everyone here wants to be peaceful. “We’ve been standing here for quite a while, and no one is menacing the National Guard. Everyone is standing up for themselves.

“We have to stand united against the attacks on the immigrant community because an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us,” Eli Lockwood told LAist.

“We’re going to have troops everywhere. We’re not going to let this happen to our country. The country will not be torn apart like it was under Biden and his autopen, according to Trump. After Trump ordered an investigation into whether Joe Biden used an autopen to sign documents in office, there was a reference to an autopen.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said on All Things Considered on Sunday that coordination with federalized National Guard troops iscollaborative, but she was critical of Trump’s decision to deploy them.

Bass believes the raids and federalization of troops to come into Los Angeles is an effort to sow chaos. She said that she doesn’t want to see civil unrest take place in this city, and she thinks bringing the National Guard in is provocative.

Trump appears likely to continue his administration’s ramped up immigration enforcement in his second term, after running on a promise to conduct mass deportations.

At Camp David, Trump said he plans to meet with people, including generals and admirals. Asked about sending Marines and protests in other cities, Trump left open that possibility.

I believe the bar is what it is. If we see danger in our country, we will be very strong in terms of law and order. “This is about law and order,” Trump said.
