The View of John Paul II: An Epilogue to the St. Augustine Annihilator of the Pope’s Obituary
When the pope dies, all the cardinals who are not over the age of 80 can vote for the next pope. Multiple rounds of voting take place over several days.
Father Thomas Reese told NPR that the death of the pope should be verified immediately and communicated to relevant parties.
The comerlengo and the papal household’s prefect are the ones who pass the news to the Vatican and the heads of nations.
John Paul II died at 9:37 p.m. on April 2, 2005 — six days after Easter. 17 minutes later, the press office of the Vatican informed journalists of his death.
Faithful from around the world are pouring into the Vatican to mourn Francis, who died Monday of a stroke and ‘cardiocirculatory collapse.’ He was 88. The viewing of his body will begin in St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, after his body is transported to the Vatican hotel where he lived.
Popes worry more about keeping their private papers out of the wrong hands now than they did in the past.
The pope’s fisherman’s ring and seal, which are traditionally destroyed with a special hammer, symbolize the end of his reign and prevent misuse, like forging documents.

The pope’s funeral will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. local time, according to the Vatican.
This is also when a pope becomes comatose. For several days, John Paul II’s body was open to the public in St Peter’s Basilica and the staff of the Apostolic Palace before his funeral on April 8.
A Celebration of Pope Benedict XVI in the Basilica of St. Mary Major, Cuba, During the First Foreign Visit to the Vatican
“So I have arranged with the master of ceremonies to lighten it: no catafalque, no ceremony for the closure of the casket, nor the deposition of the cypress casket into a second of lead and a third of oak,” he wrote.
About 2 million people watched online, and the long list of dignitaries who attended in person included four kings, five queens and at least 70 presidents and prime ministers, according to DemocracyNow.
In a break from tradition, Francis’ last testament stipulates that his burial will not be in St. Peter’s Basilica, but instead in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, a smaller church in a bustling immigrant-area of Rome.
There is a secret election taking place in the Sistine Chapel. But the public can watch the chimney for hints — black smoke means the cardinals will need to vote again; white smoke means a new pope has been chosen.
The conclave began just 16 days after the death of the pope, and 10 days after his funeral. It lasted just two days, ending on April 19 when Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected after just four ballots.
Ratzinger was announced as Pope Benedict XVI on April 19 and installed as pope with Mass on April 24. He made his first foreign trip, to his native Germany, in August of that year.
A tourist from Guadalajara, Mexico, Esquivel Telles, 55, got on a waitlist three months ago, for a group audience with Pope Francis. She had prayed to him after she was diagnosed with leukemia. She is now in remission, so she traveled to the Vatican to give thanks.
It was a dream of mine to meet him. But now we have to say goodbye,” Esquivel Telles says, strolling the cobblestones of St. Peter’s Square with a rosary in her hands.
Ahead of that, tourists and locals lit candles and placed flowers, sympathy cards and children’s drawings around a pillar in St. Peter’s Square, and sang hymns.
‘Awaiting a New Beginning. Reflections on Old Age,’ wrote Maria Munoz, pope Francis in Alicante, Spain
“He was a caring dad and a revolutionary pope,” says Maria Munoz, a tourist from Alicante, Spain. He tried to make things better in a church that was old.
After every foreign trip, Francis would visit the basilica to pray before a Byzantine-style painting of the Virgin Mary. He was there around 10 days ago.
The president and the first lady have confirmed they’ll travel to Rome for the funeral. “We look forward to being there!” Trump posted on social media. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office said he would also attend.
On Tuesday, the Vatican also released the first photos of the pope in a red velvet-lined open casket. In one, he’s flanked by two Swiss Guards in striped uniforms. In another, the Vatican’s secretary of state, Pietro Parolin, prays alongside him. The pope is wearing vestments and a bishop’s miter.
The Vatican Publishing House also Tuesday released a preface written by Francis in February of a book in Italian by Cardinal Angelo Scola, archbishop emeritus of Milan, entitled ‘Awaiting a New Beginning. Reflections on Old Age.”
“We must not be afraid of old age, we must not fear embracing becoming old, because life is life, and sugarcoating reality means betraying the truth of things,” the late pope wrote.

The Vatican’s Camerlengo Conclave: A Video of Cardinal Farrell and the Visit to the Vatican From all Over the World
Until a new pope is named, the acting head of the Vatican is the camerlengo, Cardinal Kevin Farrell — a Dublin-born naturalized U.S. citizen. The conclave, the process by which a new pope is elected, has a man in charge of preparing it.
The doors of Francis’ apartment were tied shut with a red ribbon and sealed with red wax in a video that was posted by the Vatican’s media office.
They are travelling to the Vatican from all over the world. Their conclave is expected to be held within 15 to 20 days of the pope’s death.
