The markets have fallen due to the trade war

The Morning Edition: The Left and Right in the Era of President Donald Trump’s Restoration of the Right to Free Speech, Part II: Morning Edition

During his address to Congress, Trump claimed that he had stopped government censorship and brought back free speech. This week, Morning Edition will take a look at who feels freer to speak under the Trump administration and whether the right to free speech might be changing for the better or worse.

You will hear from scientists, educators, activists from the left and far right, college Republicans, immigration attorneys and more. We also asked you, our listeners and readers, to share how you are feeling in this moment.

The people asked if we should keep their names obscured or not record them. Their reasons came down to fear: fear of retribution, fear at the border and fear of government retribution.

We begin this morning by looking at two of the most prominent scholars on the First Amendment and free speech.

Lee Bollinger and Jonathan Turley have different perspectives, and you will hear that. But what we understood from our conversations is that when it comes to this basic American right, those across the ideological spectrum find much more common ground than differences.

President Trump launched a trade war last week that has caused the global markets to fall. economists say the odds of a recession have gone up following the plunge in Asian and European markets. The U.S. will likely be in a recession if the president doesn’t go through with his plan to impose the biggest tariffs on imports. The bank thinks a recession is on the way if tariffs are hit.

The El Salvador Deportation of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia and a Second Child in the United States Due to Measles

A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to bring back Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported last month to El Salvador. The administration has until midnight to make the return happen. The Justice Department believes the court can no longer adjudicate the case because Abrego is in El Salvador.

A second child has died in Texas due to measles, according to state health officials. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. attended the 8-year-old child’s funeral on Sunday. Daisy Hildebrand is what she has been identified as. The outbreak in Texas has reached 481 confirmed cases. For the past decade, the U.S. had not reported a death related to the disease.

In light of the new tariffs against countries around the world, President Trump asked Americans to be strong, brave and patient. Today, market shares in Europe and Asia saw a slight rebound after several days of sell-offs. At the beginning of today’s trading, the market could see a small boost. However, any minor increase in stock prices today will only restore a portion of the value that was lost in recent days.

International students in the wake of the Gaza crisis: Trump defends new tariffs. And, Supreme Court backs Trump in deportation case

Iran says it will have indirect talks with the U.S. this weekend in Oman to explore a potential path to diplomacy over its nuclear program. Yesterday, Trump claimed that the U.S. would have a very big meeting with Iran on Saturday. However, this year, Iranian leaders have rejected Trump’s offers to engage in direct negotiations, citing a “breach of promises.” Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says the U.S. will have to build trust with Iran.

The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that the Trump administration can continue to deport people it says are members of a gang in Venezuela. The 5-to-4 vote threw out a lower court’s ruling to temporarily stop the deportations under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act. The attorneys for the men deported last month say that using the act during a time of peace is illegal. Many of those deported have no criminal past in the U.S., according to the men’s family members.

Several international university students who have spoken out against the war in Gaza have been taken in recent weeks by immigration agents. Plainclothes agents arrested Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil in his university housing, even though he was a legal permanent resident. Rumeysa ztrk, a Turkish graduate student, was held as she walked to meet her friends. These actions raise concerns for free speech advocates who worry that more students could be targeted for their views.

Eric Lee said that this is what happens when a dictatorship takes power and that it is a test case. If the government can act in this way, it can target anyone in the U.S. and citizens will not be protected.

The lawyers for Taal talk about the repercussions on international students’ viewpoints and how society will be affected by it.
