Mark Carney should become the next prime minister of Canada

Read Time:5 Minute, 9 Second

Carney’s story of victory and defeat for the Liberal Party in the upcoming general election: Why is Canada so proud of the American president?

As the Liberal party’s popularity continues to surge in the polls, many Canadians see Carney as a steady, diplomatic globalist who knows how to navigate international challenges, particularly with the U.S. under Trump’s increasingly strongman negotiating tactics.

He has not been elected to public office and he does not have a seat in parliament. While that’s not unprecedented, it does mean that he can’t participate in debates or votes — and suggests that he may call an election sooner rather than later, Canadian media report.

In the end he won the leadership election by a landslide, with nearly 86% of the vote, with 131,674 votes, with Trudeau’s former finance minister Chrystia Freeland coming in a very distant second with 11,134 votes.

President Donald Trump’s tariffs and controversial comments about Canada becoming the 51st state likely played a role in Carney’s win and could help his party — which was struggling against the conservatives in the polls just two months ago — hold onto power in the next general election.

Canadians are always ready to fight if someone else drops the gloves. The Americans should not make a mistake, because they didn’t ask for this fight. A former collegiate hockey player, Carney said “Canada will win in trade as in hockey.”

Canadians are angry and hurt. “Canada feels disrespected in the relationship with us right now, so I think we need to find a way to improve it.” said JamieTronnes, director of the Center for North American Prosperity and Security.

“When we see nationalism like we have not seen in a long time in Canada, it really benefits the Liberal Party, that is what this has led to,” said Jamie Tronnes, executive Director of the Center for North American Prosperity and Security.

“Progressive voters really respond to [Poilievre] like they would respond to a Trump-type character,” said Darrell Bricker, CEO of Ipsos Public Affairs, a global public opinion research group. “He’s more aggressive than Canadians are comfortable with.”

Since Trudeau announced his intention to step down, President Trump has come after Canada with steep tariffs and repeated talk of making it the 51st U.S. state, drawing reciprocal tariffs and angering many Canadians (some of whom have canceled visits stateside, eschewed American products and booed the U.S. national anthem at hockey games).

But they know how to weather economic storms. He served as Governor of the Bank of Canada during the 2008 financial crisis and later became the first non-British person to be appointed as Governor of the Bank of England, where he oversaw the bank’s post-Brexit transition.

According to a 2011 profile of Carney in Reader’s Digest Canada, he intended to study English literature and math but developed a keen interest in economics while attending lectures by Canadian-American economist John Kenneth Galbraith.

He joined public service in the early aughts after returning to Canada. He joined the Bank of Canada in 2003 as a deputy governor and was promoted to senior associate deputy minister of finance a year later.

But an election could be triggered much sooner than that. The opposition parties in Parliament could force an election by taking a no confidence vote later this month.

The Liberal Party surged quickly in recent polls, tying or beating the Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre.

Experts say that’s largely because of rising anti-Trump sentiment and a lack of confidence that Poilievre — a populist whose rhetoric has drawn comparisons to Trump — will stand up to him.

Peter Chiarelli, one of Carney’s Harvard roommates, told the magazine that he wanted to make his mark in public service and seemed to possess the qualities necessary to do so.

Chiarelli said that when he met Mark, he said that he would be the prime minister. “I bug Mark about it every year. It may come true because he cares about what he’s doing.

“Without your support, I wouldn’t be standing here,” he said. I wouldn’t have a purpose without your examples. Without your love, I wouldn’t have the strength that I need for what lies ahead.”

Cleo Carney, Canada’s next prime minister, speaks out against annexation in a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Research Foundation

While Carney’s children have largely stayed out of the public eye, his daughter Cleo, a first-year at Harvard College, introduced him onstage after Sunday’s victory.

“I want Canadians to understand what kind of a man he is,” Cleo Carney said, according to the Harvard Crimson. He is in favor of what he cares about. My dad invests because he loves what he does. He expects nothing to come without hard work, and he is always ready to work hard.”

As a candidate for prime minister, however, he said he intended to renounce his British and Irish citizenship. He told reporters earlier this month that he had written to the governments.

Last month, he compared the president to the villain from the Harry Potter franchise while speaking to supporters in Winnipeg, saying he didn’t want to dignify Trump’s talk of annexation.

“When you think about what’s at stake in these ridiculous, insulting comments of the president, of what we could be, I view this as the sort of Voldemort of comments,” Carney said. I will not repeat it, but you know what I’m talking about.

What will the incoming prime minister say about public services and defense? A friend of Robertson, the aging prime minister’s friend and mentor

Robertson, who first met Carney in the 1990s, said the incoming prime minister has a deep sense of public service and a big network from his years in finance.

He had said “safe hands.” He’s not charismatic but he wants to put the emphasis on growth so we can pay for the things we need, like public services and defense.
