The DOJ still believes that the Google should be broken up

Dodgson’s lawsuit against Google in the 2020 tech antitrust case: Google argues that it has “done enough to destroy a fundamental American value”

In its new filing, the DOJ calls Google “an economic goliath” that it says “has denied users of a basic American value—the ability to choose in the marketplace.” To deal with that, Google must give up the Chrome browser, so a new rival can operate a major gateway to search the internet. Competition or be ordered to sell the operating system is one of the recommendations the department still has. It dropped a suggestion that the company be allowed to sell Android in lieu of making the changes.

The DOJ brought its case against the internet powerhouse back in 2020 in the most significant tech antitrust case since it began its battle against Microsoft in 1990. The lawsuit says that the default search engine on Web browsers and phones was created because of anticompetitive tactics used by the company, and that it was done to protect its search dominance. The lawsuit claimed that because of its hold on search, Google can adjust the auction system through which it sells ads and increase prices to rake in more revenue.

In order to continue its dominance in the US market, Google argues, it must be the company that offers the best search technology. It also says consumers are easily able to change their default search engine, and that Google does face competition from Microsoft and others.

DoJ Spin-Offs aren’t Just For The Inside Out: Trump Has Stepped Back from a Biden-era Tech Scenario

The DOJ filed a proposal for spin-offs last year. But whether it would retain that line if Trump were to take office has been a mystery. The President has suggested that regulation is useful for getting the results he wants on certain tech issues, but he’s also stepped back from a Biden-era tech regulations.
