By restoring the viral video platform, Apple and Google are allowing the app to be downloaded on mobile devices. It provides a way for TikTok to provide security fixes for the service, and it also provides a way for TikTok to send software updates to Americans.

Some tech companies were quick to get back to work on TikTok. The morning after the app shut down, Trump posted a message on his social media network promising an executive order on his first day in office that would shield them from liability. Oracle, along with web infrastructure providers Amazon Web Services and Akamai, promptly returned service to TikTok.

Americans’ data and political views could be vulnerable to a foreign adversary due to the fact ByteDance is answerable to the Chinese government.

The law offers one way out of this impasse: It allows the president to undo the ban if he can show Congress that a deal has been made to sever TikTok from ByteDance, bringing TikTok into compliance with the law. President Trump wants the U.S. to have a 50% stake in the video app.

NPR reported last month that Oracle, Microsoft and other American investors are putting together a bid to purchase TikTok’s U.S. operation under the guidance of top White House officials. Under such a deal, ByteDance could retain a minority stake in the video service, according to two people with direct knowledge of the talks who were not authorized to speak publicly about the deliberations, which are still underway.

Other bidders, including the content creator known as Mr. Beast and former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, have said they are interested buyers.

You’ll get a choice of TikTok Lite (a smaller version that takes up 34.3MB) and TikTok (409MB). For use with slower internet connections, the lite version is for older phones. If you want to download one, select which one.

Once the download is done and you’ve selected Open, you may get a notice telling you that your phone isn’t allowed to install unknown apps and that you have to change that in Settings. You can find a link to your settings in the notice.

If you want to be safe from other outside apps being installed on your phone, you can go back into Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps > Chrome and toggle Allow from this source off.

I wasn’t able to create a video if I used either TikTok or the other app on my phone. When I tried to open another app, I received a notice that the site was trying to open a TikTok app, but it was unable to open it in the App Store.

Why I can’t download TikTok on an iPhone without downloading a VPN? How to avoid being a geo-centric user in the US

This is ignoring the fact that the app that I was told I could get the full experience by download was not available to download.

When TikTok initially disappeared, one of the main suggestions (besides moving to a different app) was to use a VPN to “fool” your phone or computer into thinking that you weren’t in the US. And if you’re a TikTok creator who uses an iPhone, you don’t seem to have many other alternatives right now, short of finding an iPhone that still has a working app or going Android.

Apple makes sure that users visiting the App Store are from the correct region. Getting around that involves jumping through quite a few hoops and ultimately may not work out — it’s a lot more work than simply downloading a VPN and setting your location to somewhere outside the US.
