helicopter flights are restricted by the FAA near the DCA airport
Crowded Airspace Has Been A Concern at Reagan National Airport, Here Is What to Know: The First American Airlines Flights Out Of Arlington, Washington
Some of that is in airspace around the world. So this is something that we’re looking toward technology,” Cox told NPR’s Michel Martin on Morning Edition. “We’re looking toward training to try to alleviate any time that the aircraft get closer together than they should.”
“Those of us who represent the region have often tried to make the case that, listen, we’ve got a couple of other airports hereā¦Let’s spread the traffic out among the airports because this congestion issue has been a concern,” Kaine told NPR’s Steve Inskeep on Morning Edition, adding that he was also concerned about whether there were enough air traffic controllers.
A bill last year to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration for the next five years included a deal to add flights to the already-busy airport, despite a heavy lobbying push against the plan by some lawmakers in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C., who warned of dangerous conditions there.
More than 13 million passengers flew American Airlines out of Reagan National Airport in 2023, according to the airline. American Airlines handles most of the commercial passenger traffic at the airport.
The airport had over 2 million visitors in its first year. The airport in 1998 was renamed after the 40th US President, Ronald Reagan.
U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt chose the airport’s location in 1938 after Congress debated the need for it, but failed to take action. Washington National Airport first opened for flights on June 16, 1941, with American Airlines winning a contest on which airline would land there first.
The airport has 58 gates and its designator name among airlines is DCA. It has three runways, one of which is runway 33, where the American Airlines flight was set to land.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is located in Arlington, VA, and is just across the river from the capital. The airport spans 860 acres, including 733 acres of land and 127 acres underwater, according to the airport.
The average number of flights per day at the DCA was 782, according to airport authorities. More than 24 million people were passengers at the airport between January 2024 and November 2024, according to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
The Two-Atom Decay of a Jet and Helicopter at DCA is Searching for Life in the Potomac River
The site of theaccident near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is being searched and recovered.
Helicopter flights will be restricted, but not suspended, according to the FAA. There are exemptions for medical emergency flights, active law enforcement and air defense, and presidential transport missions that must operating in the restricted area.
The decision will help ensure the safety of airplane and helicopter traffic, said Sean Duffy, U.S. transportation secretary. “The American people deserve full confidence in our aviation system and today’s action is a significant step towards restoring that trust.”
The FAA stated that the restrictions will remain until the NationalTransportation Safety Board completes its investigation into the collision. The preliminary report is expected to be released in about four weeks.
The restrictions come as investigators continue to pore over an area of the Potomac River where the two aircraft went down. Forty-one people died in Wednesday’s collision and have been recovered.
The Washington D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services chief says that 28 victims have been positively identified. There were 64 people on the jet and three on the helicopter. No one lived. This is the deadliest aircraft accident in the United States since 2001. The investigation and recovery operations at DCA continue, and two of the three runways remain closed. About 100 flights were canceled Friday because of the reduced capacity.
